Actually on mobile phones I am entirely alongside Carlton, in fact probably even more detatched from that world if anything ( 4 years further from teenage years, after all ). I remember when mobile phones came in and they were primarily phones, things you talked into, I was an early committed user. I can remember they were very useful for organising mass canvasses in those days. But when the smart phones came in they just didn't click , as you might say. At various stages my sons have given/ lent me their old phones to use, and for a few weeks I try. From time to time I am asked to give a mobile number and usually I say I don't have a mobile, as that's a lot easier to say than (a) I have a mobile but I've no idea where it is, (b)I have a mobile but it probably has no charge, (c) I have a mobile phone but I've no idea of the number. I wonder if there is an age over which mobile phone use is rare - I use mine all the time, it's always charged and I only keep the landline as it is bundled in with the internet back off topic... Well I'm 68 and am completely in with yellowperil and carlton43 here, while my partner is 64 and depends wholly on her mobile. Maybe a few of us need to set up a grumpy old gits group here alongside our political groupings. J.G.Harston 's post is interesting. I have two friends who have worked in IT related jobs most of their lives, and both just have an old fashioned Nokia mobile. Neither have any interest in getting a smartphone or similar.

I expect it's more personal than that. Neither of my parents have ever had mobiles but my grandad did. For me my mobile works as an on the go tablet, never had one of those, and it just simplifies sorting my sister's and mothers life out. Didn't have a mobile 10 years ago, but it's pretty much superseded the land-line, which is still there as it gives us free calls to the USA unlike the mobile package I've got. Plus smartphones are essential now, how else could we be on this site 24 hours a day, 365 days a year? (whisper it softly) Who wants to be on this site 24 hours a day, 365 days a year? carlton43 ? @boogieeck ? Merseymike ? Devil Wincarnate ?

I stay signed in all the time, but how much I post depends on time of year. More outside term time! And less if I'm physically at work, not working from home....

Back on topic, I don't think it is going to be a good night for the LibDems. Maybe not as bad in Fortune Green as predicted (this is based purely on the fact that apart from Flick Rea the other two Lib Dem candidates were in quite a close 2nd place to Labour in 2018, and Lib Dem gains from a close second place in local by-elections are not unusual) . Of course the day starts with minus one seats, so it is a bit like being Sheffield Wednesday last season..

I would agree with andrew111 above but I would be surprised if Nancy Jirira wasn't elected. I can't say I personally have been involved, but I have friends who have helped in the campaign and I think 5 of 6 Lib Dem MPs have been to help (including Ed Davey) as well as peers and members from across London. I guess the question might be the margin and how close the gap is between the Lib Dems and Labour, with London Council elections in May 2022 fast approaching. But let's see the result.

Well that's a Labour gain confirmed then

Andrew’s Previews did not mention that Nancy featured in the BBC’s Hospital programme which documented her recovery from COVID-19, it was very moving.

There is also a by-election taking place today for the West ward of Handforth parish council. There are two candidates, Steve Cunningham and Sam Milward, both independents.

Who vacated their seat, who are the candidates linked to and has anyone read the Standing Orders?

The parish by-election in Handforth (West) is caused by the resignation of Aled Brewerton.
The previous vacancy in Handforth (West), caused by the controversial disqualification of Jean Thompson for non-attendance, was filled at a by-election on 6 May by John Smith's wife, Julie.
Barry Burkhill has also resigned his seat in Handforth (South). No by-election was called and the council has co-opted Kerry Sullivan, who sat on the parish council 2015-2019. She was elected in 2015 under the slogan "Improving Handforth" alongside John Smith and Cynthia Samson.
So, with the sole exception of Brian Tolver, John Smith has cleaned up the parish council and of course has taken over as chairman.
At last week'a meeting of the parish council, John Smith proposed that they declare themselves as a town council with effect from 31 July and the meeting agreed. So Handforth becomes a town (population 6,266) and John Smith will be the town mayor.
