A hold and a gain - pretty decent night Rather better than that, I would say. The gain in Chi from third place (well done, Cllr Brisbane), the hold in North Curry to keep control of the council. Even in the two no hoper English seats, Swindon and Rugby, we stood a candidate and kept ahead of the Greens! Of course no candidates in the Scottish and Welsh seats, but given that in Harlech that was also true of Labour and the Tories, and in Murdostoun it was a strong win for the Indy, no great damage done there either. To have made it a perfect night we would have really trounced the opposition in Somerset, but in some ways being made to work hard by a determined opposition is no bad thing. I’m surprised the North Curry result was as close as it was, although as has been noted it was caused by the resignation by a Lib Dem councillor of 34 years who clearly had a big personal vote. He resigned because he had wanted the council to go back to the committee system. In my opinion, last weeks result in Old Cleeve was better than this weeks result for the Lib Dem’s. My overall reading of the situation is that 2019 was very much the perfect moment for the Lib Dem’s in Somerset West and Taunton, The previous very unpopular Conservative council has now been replaced by an unpopular Lib Dem one, with a divided Lib Dem group and an unimpressive council leader. They would very likely struggle to win a majority again, although of course it’s likely that 2019 will be the only election for Somerset West and Taunton council.

So the carrier pigeon has finally limped over from Harlech.... It got intercepted by Rover while flying over The Village towards the council offices in Caernarfon. We did know the result some 10 minutes before midnight although the actual figures were only published on the Council's twitter at 06.56 this morning.

Harlech Birks (No Desc) 154 Hughes (Ind) 153 Owen (PC) 161 Mr Owen must be relieved this was under FPTP, as surely he would have been sunk on any preferencing. Also that the votes for the two non-party candidates were perfectly balanced. That must be one of the weakest electoral mandates a councillor has ever received.

I would surmise there have been even closer 3-way finishes than that in the past, I suppose the answer is in LEAP somewhere?

Can't beat the Leicester result, but in Hindhead ward for Waverley BC May 2019: Jerome Davidson Liberal Democrats 544 Elected Peter Isherwood Conservative 542 Elected (drawn by lot) Geoffrey Whitby Liberal Democrats 542 Not elected Gerrard Hall Conservative 437 Not elected David George Irwin Labour 79 Not elected Geoff Whitby's comment on the result, after he had seen the schedule of meetings for the elected borough councillors, was that he'd had "a lucky escape".

I still find it amazing that the previous Plaid councilor (1999-2016) was unopposed from when he first ran in 1999 until 2008, and in 2012 he only faced a Plaid splitter-group candidate. He clearly had a strong local following, but he/ Plaid obviously weren't tactical enough to announce his retirement on nomination closing day to avoid too much competition. More people ran in 2016 than in every election combined 1995-2012.

A quick shout for the last of the elections postponed from 6 May - the election of 15 parish councillors in Shotton, County Durham - not to be confused with Shotton Town Council in Flintshire. Back in 2017, the result was Independent 7, Lab 7, North East Party 1 - and the parish council elected an Independent chairman. This year, 15 candidates were nominated with the description "Supporting Change in Shotton Colliery" and there were 11 Labour candidates. The poll was countermanded following the death of sitting Labour councillor, Ray Turnbull. He has been replaced by a new Labour candidate, Kate Huntington, but otherwise there is no change in the line-up of candidates. The parish combines with neighbouring parishes, Haswell and South Hetton, to form the Shotton and South Hetton division of Durham County Council. The division elected 1 Labour and 1 Independent in 2017, both of whom were also Shotton parish councillors. On 6 May, the division voted in two Independents by 1084/840 over 593/471 for Labour - one Independent gain from Labour. Successful County Council Independent, Ivan Cochrane, was re-elected and is seeking re-election to the parish council as "Supporting Change for Shotton Colliery". Both defeated county council Labour candidates, Kylie Austin Young and Alan Liversidge, are seeking election to the parish council. Kylie Austin Young, now Labour, was elected to the parish council as an Independent in 2017 and Alan Liversidge failed to be elected to the parish council in 2017. The results just announced show 14 of the 15 "Supporting Change in Shotton Colliery" candidates were elected whilst Rona Hardy was the only Labour one to be successful. The 15 "Supporting Change in Shotton Colliery" polled between 517 votes and 306, the highest being Ivan Cochrane, the recently re-elected Independent for Durham Council, and second Thomas Blakey, the recent Parish Council Chairman. The 11 Labour candidates polled between 359 and 127 with Rona Hardy having previously been a Parish Councillor elected in 2013 and 2017 and only one other candidate (neither of the two defeated Durham Council candidates) coming close to being elected.

Yes, I remember that nail bitingly close result. I assume at the following election, the Lib Dem's leaflets will have said it was a two horse race and that only they can beat Labour here.
