Robert Arthur was the indy who got 154 votes in 2017. Cindy MacKenzie was the Conservative candidate in 2017 and 2012. Robert McKendrick is the son of the deceased councillor (also Robert McKendrick) who topped the poll in 2017 and was elected in the previous 2 elections. Chris Roarty is presumably related to Louise Roarty who is one of the sitting Labour councillors. The indy who got 284 votes in 2017 was the incumbent elected for the SNP in 2007 and 2012.

A quick shout for the last of the elections postponed from 6 May - the election of 15 parish councillors in Shotton, County Durham - not to be confused with Shotton Town Council in Flintshire.

Back in 2017, the result was Independent 7, Lab 7, North East Party 1 - and the parish council elected an Independent chairman.

This year, 15 candidates were nominated with the description "Supporting Change in Shotton Colliery" and there were 11 Labour candidates. The poll was countermanded following the death of sitting Labour councillor, Ray Turnbull. He has been replaced by a new Labour candidate, Kate Huntington, but otherwise there is no change in the line-up of candidates.

The parish combines with neighbouring parishes, Haswell and South Hetton, to form the Shotton and South Hetton division of Durham County Council. The division elected 1 Labour and 1 Independent in 2017, both of whom were also Shotton parish councillors. On 6 May, the division voted in two Independents by 1084/840 over 593/471 for Labour - one Independent gain from Labour.

Successful County Council Independent, Ivan Cochrane, was re-elected and is seeking re-election to the parish council as "Supporting Change for Shotton Colliery". Both defeated county council Labour candidates, Kylie Austin Young and Alan Liversidge, are seeking election to the parish council. Kylie Austin Young, now Labour, was elected to the parish council as an Independent in 2017 and Alan Liversidge failed to be elected to the parish council in 2017.

Looking at the full result in Murdostoun from 2017, the balancing of the Labour votes and transfers to get both candidates ahead of the Tory in the final round with absolutely zero margin for error really is a thing of beauty.

Or to put it another way, they were probably very lucky!

Rather better than that, I would say. The gain in Chi from third place (well done, Cllr Brisbane), the hold in North Curry to keep control of the council. Even in the two  no hoper English seats, Swindon and Rugby, we stood a candidate and kept ahead of the Greens! Of course no candidates in the Scottish and Welsh seats, but given that in Harlech that was also true of Labour and the Tories, and in Murdostoun it was a strong win for the Indy, no great damage done there either. To have made it a perfect night we would have really trounced the opposition in Somerset, but in some ways being made to work hard by a determined opposition is no bad thing.

A pity. From my (brief) involvement Labour had a good young candidate but she lived not just outside the ward but some way outside the city at Bracklesham Bay. The pair of councillors in Chichester East (one remains) were the first two Labour councillors in Chichester city since, at least, local government reorganisation in the 1970s.
