That purports to be a joint statement by the Council and Cllr Jones. What is messy about it? Is he again claiming not to have resigned? Who is the "an individual who is threatening legal action"?

The first time round, he didn't submit a post-dated resignation letter; he wrote a letter saying that he intended to resign on a certain date in the future. he then changed his mind before that date. Wigan Council, for reasons I have never understood (I haven't seen the full text of the relevant legal judgment*) interpreted his letter as if he had already resigned as soon as they received the letter, despite the letter saying otherwise. The council then went through the process of running a by-election for a seat which was not even vacant in the first place, thereby causing the legal kerfuffle of having to abandon the by-election part way through. * is the judgment somewhere? Davıd Boothroyd might have it Unfortunately it is not on BAILII or the Judiciary website. It will be on the professional websites like LexisNexis if you have access to them. The case citation is [2018] EWHC 528 (Admin).

I know it is very early days but Steve Jones is still shown as a Councillor on the Wigan MBC website.

Roy Cornell (Con, Roffey South, Horsham DC) is no longer listed as a councillor as of 23/9. I can't find further details at the moment.

Cllr. Bowden (Ind, Heath on Cardiff) has announced on Twitter that she intends to stand down next month as a councillor on Cardiff and the reason for standing down and not retiring when the six month rule kicks in was to allow Heath to have three councillors and not two. I am not sure however what the rules state about whether Cardiff has to call a by-election during the six month rule Called for Thu 11th November

Most of us here are with John Donne on that issue. Any councillor's death diminishes us, because we are involved in local electoral politics.

MELTON Borough Council (Leics): vacancy for Melton Dorian ward (non-attendance) Cllr Alan Pearson (IND, elected as Conservative) is stuck in Australia. Pearson had served on Leicestershire County Council (2013-21).
Dorian is a 3-member urban ward. In 2019, 2 CONS, 1 Green were elected.

It seems very harsh if someone is unable to return to this country because of Covid restrictions, though presumably if his circumstances allowed, he could have joined meetings by Zoom, though it would be almost impossible to keep up with other councillor responsibilities.

My first question is if he asked for his unavoidable absence to be excused (Local Government Act 1972, s. 85 (1)).

Straight out of Peter Simple. The new Green candidate will be the noted ecologist at Lancaster, Dr. Hans Kiosk.

That ward must have one of the highest turn over of councillors anywhere. Of the 3 elected in 2015, not one served a full- term and of the 3 by-election winners, only 1 re-stood and was re-elected in 2019, so the winner of this by-election will be the 9th different one for 3 seats in 6 and a half years. One of the previous by-elections was won with just 98 votes.

This ward will cease to exist soon, when it is likely to be merged with Scotforth East ward once the final recommendations for Lancaster's 2023 ward boundaries are confirmed.

Ryedale: Cropton. Cause: Death of John Clark (L) on 11 August 2021. Interestingly, because Ryedale council doesn't have a Council Leader, and Cllr Clark was chair of Finance & Resources, Ryedale was effectively a Liberal-controlled council!
