If the opposition parties have any sense they will collect together every remain/rejoin statement he has ever made. Labour will clearly run this as a one issue NHS by-election. Every leaflet will stress DR Paul Williams. The very worst sentimentalising shite will be rolled out. It's a cynical tactic but one that worked well for Labour in Tooting so I get why they do it. Is there a big hospital that employs lots of people in the Hartlepool seat, do we know? University Hospital of Hartlepool.

Is Williams still going to stand for Cleveland PCC or will there be another candidate?

I have a suspicion we've not heard the last about Williams's Twitter account: (In case he deletes this one here's a link to a screenshot: )

No doubt the usual suspects will moan, but it'll be hypocritical. Is it crude? Yes. However, it's not much different from many other discussions that happen all over the country every day.

According to the leaked CLP Secretary's email, "Jon" will get the PCC nomination. Jon is supposed to be Jonathan Brash, a teacher who is standing in Hartlepool's Burn Valley ward in the locals.

Helen Whately. I mean, what an unprofessional thing for a candidate to say. Terrible. etc.

Jon is supposed to be Jonathan Brash, a teacher who is standing in Hartlepool's Burn Valley ward in the locals. If so, then it's probably the same Jonathan Brash who was defeated by Barry Coppinger in the original police commissioner selection. If I remember correctly, he subsequently left Labour, but clearly he's back. I remember him from the Regional Board once upon a time.

University Hospital of Hartlepool. Those employed in health services make up 16.9 per cent of Hartlepool's workforce (2019 count, BRES). Compares to 20 per cent for Darlington, 26 per cent for Middlesbrough, but 13 per cent for the country at large.

A reminder that in the current Parliament the majority of Labour MPs are women.

Williams confirmed as Labour candidate. Very good news indeed. An extremist Remainer chosen for a very Leave seat. Really really smart move. And no one got any say in the choice at all. A stitch-up from the party centre. Rather as if the party was deliberately trying to lose the seat right from the start?

From his Twitter he seems to spend a lot of time discussing Uganda.. Fair Dos. It is one of the most important topics in the minds of Hartlepool voters.

You've got to admire SKS's ruthlessness with a shortlist of one. That stopped Witchy-Poo!
I'm seeing Union Jacks on the Labour literature. 'Paul's contribution to the British vaccination effort' etc.

After Paul Williams, I think the Tories should go for this. Really amp up a strong local or consistent candidate that will appeal to Hartlepool voters. Although it will be a challenge if Reform UK put up Richard Tice again, and that could split the vote like last time.

A short campaign in the middle of a pandemic trying to compete with all the other local and regional elections? There really won't be much hope of doing a lot of in-depth or vote-changing persuading for this one.
Reform UK in particular are screwed. They've got no time to build their brand recognition and no time to set out a policy stall.
Similarly, I struggle to see how the Tories have enough time to spread the message of Paul Williams' flaws to any great extent.

If the Tories don't win Hartlepool it'll be because of a successful focus on the NHS by the Labour candidate. So they need to make sure the agenda isn't only on that subject.

Honestly since the election is on the same day as the locals, an independent gain is more likely than a Tory gain in Hartlepool at least. I would think it would work the other way around - the various independent and localist groups will do worse than otherwise in the council elections because of the concurrent by-election.
