Revised proposals for Nottinghamshire. Minimal change from the initial proposals.

Changes from initial proposals

• Ashfield to take in Berry Hill and Bull Farm & Pleasley Hill (part - ward split) from Mansfield instead of Brick Kiln and Grange Farm.
• 'Worksop & Retford' renamed 'Bassetlaw'
• 'Sherwood' renamed 'Sherwood Forest'

The Labour counter-proposal for Northampton was accepted. Makes Northampton North a very good target for Labour (would have comfortably flipped in 2017 and been significantly closer in 2019) but at the cost of making Northampton South much stronger for the Conservatives.

Glad about more sensible and less disruptive proposals for Leicestershire being accepted. I am not surprised about the opposition to splitting Rutland & Melton but the reality is there is no choice in the matter and in any case Rutland & Stamford existed as a constituency for 65 years (1918-1983), 26 years longer than Rutland & Melton has existed so far.

Those outer Leicester areas (my home area) would I think be pretty indifferent in practice to Rutland/Stamford vs Rutland/Melton. The best situation would be to go in with their actual district of Harborough and it is a shame that has been lost, but it is not ofc a change to the longstanding parliamentary status quo in that respect.

The reality is that it would be a peripheral area to any rural seat - indeed its peripheral within the Harborough district itself, and its biggest connections are with Leicester, but any formal connection with Leicester would be pitchfork time, so they will need to make the best of whatever arrangement.

Rutland & Stamford does not need to include any part of Leicestershire. We have proven this on this forum multiple times.

The Liberal Democrats are submitting a counterproposal in Northamptonshire for six seats which reunites the towns and parishes of Wellingborough and Irthlingborough. The awkward ward split in Corby Rural ward is replaced with a less awkward one in Thrapston ward. It also eliminates the need for an orphan split ward. It has four split wards (Earls Barton, Irthlingborough, Thrapston, Hackleton & Grange Park) as does the revised BCE proposal (Corby Rural, Irchester, Irthlingborough, Silverstone). The Irthlingborough ward split is in a different place.

It's a lot of split wards, but at least each split complies with the BCE guidance (which is more than the BCE can say of its own scheme).

Overall it's a huge improvement on the BCE plan and I wish you good luck with it.

Are you going to try to do anything about the mess the BCE has made of Rutland and adjoining areas?

We understand the Commission won't want to change more than 5% of the seats at the final stage. We're pushing it with a six seat counterproposal in a 47 seat region. Unpicking the 3 county Rutland & Stamford impacts many more seats. We can tell the Commission that they got Leicestershire and Lincolnshire & Rutland just about right first time. That would involve twelve seats. I can't see a more limited way of doing it. If you or anyone here can, please tell us.
