Banning your opponents from standing for election is especially typical of tin-pot dictatorships. In fairness if he’d been convicted in the impeachment trial that would have been a consequence and part of a legitimate long standing process But there wasn’t really any way aside from that to bar him from standing for office again The way he’s actually going to go out - by losing an election followed by losing the republican primary is infinitely more healthy.

Absolutely, as much as I think he deserved to be convicted, certainly in the second impeachment trial anyway, it removed a way for him to become a lifelong martyr

Is this the first time that a Putsch has potentially been plotted in a KFC? Florida Man syndrome.

It is now obvious that Jan 6th 2021 set a template for others.
We can laugh at these people until one day when they get what they want, then it won't be funny anymore.

According to a Le Monde article I juste read the federal supreme court has suspended recently reelected Ibaneis Rocha, MDB governor of the federal district. He was in charge of the security.

They also ordered all protestor camps outside military bases to be taken down within 24 hours and ordered social media to take down any anti-democratic propaganda.

They should be locked up alongside Lula.

Copycat uprising it seems. I wonder where they got that idea from! For all those saying that Jan 6 was less serious than any 'normal' incidence of rioting/looting will surely npw see how ludicrous those comments were. General rioting/looting are serious offences in themselves of course, and the perpetrators should feel the full weight of the law, but Trump's actions on and before Jan 6 set a precedent never before seen in 'Western democracies'. Now any set of extremists who are lied to about an election being 'stolen' feel emboldened(even encouraged) by their leaders to 'take matters into their own hands'! trump has brought the USA down to the level of tin-pot dictatorships in that specific regard. This is why he really should have been excluded from 'public service' in future, for the general preservation of the democratic process. And this is why the comparisons of Jan 6 with civilian rioting is fatuous! It's funny how leftists only care about political crimes against property and public order offences when they are perpetrated by right-wing nutjobs. It was disgusting how this scumbag got positively hero-worshipped by the Welsh leftist intelligentsia when he was eventually sent down for a trivial amount of time for not paying his fine for breaking into and vandalising Jonathan Evans MP's office. People who commit these sorts of crimes, regardless of whether they are left-wing or right-wing nutjobs, are a disgrace; they should be banned from voting for life for their crimes against representative democracy.

I'm not sure that some dickhead who went to prison for criminal damage in Cardiff twelve years ago because of cuts to S4C quite equates to Trump trying to engineer a coup.

This is an article detailing some of the artwork damaged by the mobs. It'll be costly, but most can be repaired. However the 17th century Balthazar Martinot clock, which was given to the Portuguese royal family by Louis XIV, and taken to Brazil by Dom John VI, was irreparably destroyed. There is a smaller version at the Palace of Versailles, but the one in Brasilia looks like a goner.

Oh, I agree with that, absolutely. It's just that sooner or later, this disorganised rabble will become a juggernaut - still disorganised, still badly behaved, but unstoppable. How are you going to lock up millions upon millions?

In the US for a start I think Biden loses to De Santis.

Hard to imagine Biden standing again, but maybe he'll be stood by his handlers; I don't think he has much of a say in this. You might be right, De Santis looks like a good bet to placate the masses.

"Millions upon millions" of what, exactly? QAnonism will never have a mass following, thankfully.

It's grim for Brazil that the best that they could bring up for the last election were Bolsonaro and Lula. Nutter versus crook. Admittedly not the worst of either type to have run for the presidency before.

'His handlers'. An assertion seemingly peddled by extremists and idiots.
