Serzh Sargysyan, of the Republican Party (a national conservative party) has been re-elected president in a landslide with 58.6% of the vote. His nearest rival was Raffi Hovannisian of the liberal Heritage Party, who won 36.8%. None of the other candidates polled more than 3%. There had been some claims an irregularities, an assassination attempt, legal battles and a hunger strike - and yet most people in the world have probably never heard of Armenia - let alone what goes on there. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armenian_presidential_election,_2013

I think many will at least be vaguely aware of the genocide, notwithstanding Herr Schicklegruber's notorious remark.

Is happening today (April 2nd).
A new ElectoralSystem was adopted in 2012: Instead of the old mixed system for 131 MPs, there will be pure PR for 101 seats with a threshold of 5% for parties and 7% for coalitions. So far so easy, but it gets complicate: If a party receives a majority, it is entitled for at least 54% of the seats, therefor never more than 2/3. If no government is formed within 6 days, a RunOff has to take place within 4 weeks; then the seats of the non-winning parties are preserved, but the winner wins additional MPs, totally 54%.
This time there might be a close race between the parties of the present president Sargsyan ("Rep.P.") and that of his precessor Kocharyan (1998-2008), which is officially founded&led by Tsarukyan, a super-wealthy "BusinessMan".
LastElection - party - GallupPoll 69 Rep.P. (EPP-observer) 33%=41 33 ProsperousA./Tsarukyan (ACRE) 29%=36 07 ANC (ALDE, exPresident TerPetrosyan) + PPA 4% 05 A.Ren. (EPP-observer) 5%=6 05 A.Rev.F. (PES-observer) 8%=7 04 Heritage/ORO (EPP-observer) 4% 03 FreeDem. 3% 02 WayOut 9%=11 03 Ind. 00 A.Comm.P. 3%
So far A. has had - despite the OverallMajority of RP - a coalition with ARF.

From the intial results and exit polling, the most likely result is the incumbent PM, Nikol Pashinyan, and his Civil Contract party has won - perhaps even with a slim majority. (If he gets over 50% of the votes, but not seats, the electoral system awards extra seats to get him to 54%).
A much better result than letting former President Kocharyan back into power, IMO.
My preference however was for Levon Ter-Petrosyan - the only one that didn't seem deluded about the Artsakh situation.

Few precincts results show the ruling party ("CivilContract") far, far ahead.

If you so wish, you can watch some vote counting live on tv here. The parties are numbered 1 to 25. Yerek/3 is Pashinyan, Ksan-chors/24 is Kocharyan. www.1tv.am/en/

Here You can watch the LiveStream-VoteCounting of any (!) precinct: www.electiononline.am1 person is distributing each BallotPaper to the voted party's representative. With this method it will take some time to count 1 million votes.

Most TeleVision-journalists/pundits and people in those CountingCentres look rather depressed. Probably a result of the lost war?

Actually having looked at a number of different polling stations they don't appear all to be doing the same thing- in some for example one man seems to making a series of piles of ballot papers while the others just look on. But what an amazingly open system to have all of them being filmed throughout. though there seems quite a lot of differences between stations as to where the camera is located.

It's quite creepy and voyeuristic, but I suppose it makes some sense. It's pretty common across the former USSR and there are some nice examples in Russia of both carousel voting and plain old ballot stuffing.
Having a quick look at random places just now, many places seem to have finished. The lights are either off or, where the lights are still on, in the main you see a dozen very bored looking people. Only a couple of places, mainly in districts one and two, seem to have any real activity going on.
