In Tokyo Ms.Koike was reelected with an increased majority (from 45% to 59%), unopposed by LDP.

Yes, and despite elections happening in Japan nearly every Sunday Suga was highly engaged in this. Doubtful, that he will even (be allowed to) candidate for the LDP-presidency, let alone prevail.

A reminder that Suga's approval ratings were massively positive to start with, things aren't so sweet for him now.

Was the electorate tyred of the incumbent? Building a casino played a certain role. Then the LDP-spectrum ran 2 candidates (who received together not much more than the left winner). But otherwise it was mainly an ouverture for the GE. Even in Suga's constituency the numbers did not really differ. An ExitPoll had (dis)approval for him at 24%:64%.

Their Gen.Elec. will happen in few days and still no discussion (apart from the Politics-thread). Unsurprisingly the ApprovalNumbers of an old-fashioned Conservative like Kishido have been falling (especially in the marginal (sub)urban areas) and yesterDay a ByElec. for an UpperHouse-seat was lost by LDP (rather surprisingly). Hard to say, what will prevail in the coming days: Either the conformism of many Japanese encouraging antiLDP-independents/apoliticals to turn out after years of resignation under Abe; or the fear of another chaos as under the last nonLDP-government.

A very basic, short, but interesting outline of what helps keep the LDP in power: Japan election: Why the ruling party keeps winning www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-59073986Interesting that door-to-door campaigning isn’t permitted.

Hmmm… Apparently ‘Door-to-door solicitation is banned because personal contact is felt to have an influence in Japan which is very much greater than in other countries. This is because the Japanese typically place a higher value on what is called ‘human relationships’ (ningen kankei).’ www.nakasendoway.com/political-campaigning/

But leafleting is. When I was in Japan in 2018 it was during city council election season, and we had plenty of leaflets in the letterbox. Suits me fine, I hate having to make human contact with people. Give me 8000 leaflets instead.

"Liberal Democrats on track to retain power..." Not often you wake up to that. I would say that like in Uzbekistan, the LibDems are definitely winning here!

Ichirō Ozawa reportedly defeated after fifty two years in the Diet. Ordinarily 'long-serving opposition politician ousted by LDP' would not normally be seen as 'good' news, he is a frankly satanic figure so...

I assume the LDP won their customary thumping majority?
