Very nice to see some stats– thanks for that. The last couple of elections really have been abnormally good for the Conservatives on the island haven’t they? Makes me wary of an above average snap back next time. Bob Seely is popular (moreso than Turner was, I think) and I’ve heard the opposition parties were quite focused on attacking each other in recent elections. But yes, I could easily see a good swing against the Tories next election. Indeed this is why I think it could be a wise move for him to stand in West where his personal vote may offset some of the relative Conservative weakness. I don't suppose that is his rationale though - presumably does he live in that part of the island?

Yes, he apparently lives in Brighstone and used to be the local councillor for Central Wight ward (which included the area on the old boundaries).

Were there any particular reasons the Tories overturned quite a big majority in this seat to take it back in 2001 when they made such minimal progress overall?

Andrew Turner did have a fairly effective campaign. But possible also that it was affected by the sitting MP becoming caught up in a police inquiry after saying he had withdrawn treatment from a young leukemia patient who wished to die: www.theguardian.com/uk/2000/feb/10/mattwells

The above are both true, but the reasons may never be fully understood. Euthanasia has sometimes been cited as the issue which lost it for Peter Brand, but that may well not be the whole story.
