That's a good read, thanks.
A couple of minor points. Leith Hill is the highest hill in southeast England, which is better than saying one of the highest in the south of England. The hill reaches 900 feet above sea level but the tower on the top takes you another 100 feet up. For the planespotters, from here you can view the runways of both Heathrow and Gatwick at the same time.
Also worth noting that the constituency extend as far south as the village of Charlwood which borders Gatwick airport. Its pretty much at the end of the runway.

Its most famous residents were Howard and Hilda Hughes, Martin and Ann Bryce, and Paul Ryman. And the composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, whose childhood home was Leith Hill Place (although he was born in Down Ampney, Gloucestershire), and who was also a long-time resident of Dorking, where many of his most famous works were composed.

I will certainly change the bit about Leith Hill. I thought that the Plough inn was 971 feet above sea level, but I could have been wrong. Thanks. I know it's the highest pub in SE England. And it's very nice, too. The best pub in the constituency is, however, the Surrey Oaks in Parkgate, a hamley of Newdigate.

I've been there. Since my best mate lives in the constituency, and we frequently go out into the country for a pint, I have probably been to every pub worth going to in the constituency by now. He moved there from Chessington many years ago. We used to go regularly to the Scarlett Arms at Walliswood which is very pretty too. I've been there, but not for many years. When I was single and lived in walking distance of Clapham Junction station, most evenings and days off would involve a train out to somewhere south of London for a pub or six. Neither apply any more, and in any case I'm not at all a fan of Hall & Woodlouse beers, which rules out a lot of pubs in the Surrey/Sussex borders after their purchase of King & Barnes and expansion. Though I gather the Punchbowl at Oakwood Hill is no longer one of their houses. Looking at a map, it must be 25 miles for a circular walk from Ockley station, via the Punchbowl, Scarlett, Kings Head (Holmbury St Mary), Plough, Surrey Oaks and Crown in Capel. I did that walk regularly, and the last train back from Ockley is certainly not late- which highlights how much unfitter I am now! In the days before Google Maps, I doubt I took the fastest route either!

I wonder why Barnaby doesn't say anything about Labour strength in Mole Valley? . Actually we had a very good friend at university who we lost touch with for many a year and then came across many years later at the time when we were both councillors and discovered that she was actually a Labour councillor in Mole Valley. She admitted she was a pretty endangered species even then! Can't remember when that reunion was exactly but probably late last century. Don't think there have been any Labour councillors in Mole Valley this century.

Leatherhead North is the only ward where Labour councillors have been elected since at least the 1980s, and the last one lost their seat in the later Blair years.

We knew her as Heather Smith, can't remember what name she was going by in her councillor days.

Her husband was also a councillor for the same ward from 1995 to 1999.

At some point I would have found time to pursue the records, having once remembered her existence, but I wondered if somebody else woud get there first! We had lost touch shortly after leaving university in 1961, found one another again sometime in the 1990s, and had forgotten her again since then! She was really more Eileen's friend than mine, so mine by one remove so to speak.I suppose she must have been the last Labour councillor in Mole Valley? She was I think if anything slightly older than us so would now be definitely in her eighties if still alive.

Its most famous residents were Howard and Hilda Hughes, Martin and Ann Bryce, and Paul Ryman. that would be rather appropriate since Howard Hughes got a mention in a 10CC song. They had a recording studio in Dorking which is why Dorking gets a mention in their rather lightweight song From Rochdale To Ocho Rios. The title of their album, Deceptive Bends, almost certainly came from a sign on the A24 between Leatherhead and Dorking. If you google "Deceptive bends sign" and look at images, you get loads of covers of the 10cc album but to the right hand side you have some road signs including one supposedly from Ashdown Forest in the 50s, which has an artistic treatment of a car going out of control and a 'Deceptive Bends' legend (it was temporary rather than permanent).
