Maybe we should register Radical as a name for local branding purposes. I might look into that. One or two surnames that are still well-known - Clutterbuck, Pegler, Godsell (probably related to the current dairy farmers and cheesemakers) and I imagine the defeated Independent Radical W B Withey to be an ancestor of pete who runs the local stationer/printers. No Lusty or Apperly though. Surely Lusty will make a comeback during a lockdown?
The poet George Crabbe featured the name Clutterbuck in one of his poems :
Something one day occurred about a bill That was not drawn with true mercantile skill, And I was asked and authorised to go To seek the firm of Clutterbuck and Co.
Interesting that so many names are still noted in the area.

I was looking for something for Merseymike and came across the interesting result for the Board of Guardians for Toxteth. There can't have been many places/wards where three women were elected as they were in East ward.
And West ward was decidedly Conservative - I haven't come across many places so far where they dominated the top places like that. I suspect John Wolfe Tone Morrissey's view of Irish Home Rule can easily be guessed at East wardElectedMary Lucy Healey (Liberal) 2,187 James Pilkington Barnes (Conservative) 2,130 Helen Ronald (description missing) 2,036 Edward Jones (Liberal) 1,648 Hester Emily Booth (Ratepayers) 1,465 R. Wonder if the Abercrombie has any connection with Abercrombie Square - now part of the University campus?

The Birmingham Daily Post in its roundup of results which includes Warwickshire, Staffordshire, and even bits of Leicestershire and Gloucestershire doesn't give the full result for Hinckley but notes: "That nine Liberals, four conservatives and two publicans were elected".Trebles all round!
It also ran a story about the result in the Acocks Green ward of Yardley District council :
Thomas Blantern (Progressive) 189 Mr Z Walker (Conservative) 188 Mr J Williams (Progressive) 188 Mr T Griffin (Conservative) 187
The Deputy returning officer Mr Matthews made a casting vote in favour of Mr Walker, which didn't go down well with the Progressives who said that he was not a parochial elector and had therefore no power to do so.
They also required a scrutiny of votes after Matthews had ruled one elector had voted for Griffin and Walker, rather than Walker and Williams

As requested by Crimson King here are the results for the Thornton UDC. With some results we get occupational information and others only party labels. Here we get both, although only for those successfully elected, not those who tried and failed. In other places we get neither. Why they couldn't track down Mr Johnson's affiliation or non affiliation when they managed everybody else I don't know. I'm sure we are all pleased that the Independent fish salesman was successful. ElectedMr R Jennings, quarry owner (Liberal) 376 Mr A Hardy, mill manager, (Liberal) 283 Mr J Wood , colliery proprietor (Conservative) 252 Mr T Craven, gentleman, (Liberal) 246 Mr R Fisher, wool merchant (Unionist) 238 Mr R Hollingsworth, Fish salesman, (Independent) 233 Mr R Johnson, grocer (not known) 231 Mr J H A Hey, fire lighter maker (Liberal) 229 Mr W Pickles, wool merchant (Liberal) 219 Mr J Illingworth, farmer (Liberal) 218 Mr J Morton, brick maker (Conservative) 211 Mr J Barraclough, gentleman (Liberal) 180 Not ElectedMr J Craven (Liberal) 177 Mr W Drake (Liberal) 162 Mr T Hanson (Conservative) 160 Mr J R Knowles (Conservative) 158 Mr T Jarratt (Conservative) 138 Mr J Sugden (Liberal) 135 Mr J Wilkinson (Liberal) 119 - Mr Wilkinson had been chair of the late board here, but obviously not a very popular one. Mr J Dixon (Liberal) 101 Mr J Marsden (Liberal) 83 Mr J Drake (Conservative) 83 Mr A Southwart (Liberal) 70 Mr D Sharp (Liberal) 59 - another member of the former board who has gone from public office to stone last in short order. 667 voted out of 1,410 (47.3% turnout)

In other news Redcar saw Mr Wetherald, a "bus proprietor" being elected. Ooh! In 1894? And he's described the same way when standing for the previous authority in 1887.
I've found a reference to a party of gentlemen who almost came to grief in 1878 when the fog descended on them on the way back from a wreckage sale and the driver a Mr J Wetherald found himself up to his neck in water. However, he was rescued by fishermen.
It's possible that the Wetheralds moved from carriages and traps to buses? Carriage makers certainly did.

This strikes me as the list with the highest number of 'artisan' candidates so far. I'm also struck when I go through these occupational lists, how many auctioneers feature. No idea why this would be.

for Devil Wincarnate Cheadle and Gatley UDC The Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser noted that "as a result of a political compromise there were contests in only two of the wards...viz Cheadle and Cheadle Hulme in each of which wards an independent candidate was nominated". Cheadle WardMr Milne (Liberal) 301 Mr Fernyhough (Conservative) 226 Mr Higgins (Independent) 197 Mr Edmunds (Conservative) 175 Cheadle Hulme wardMr G Board (Conservative) 129 Mr A Stansfield (Independent Conservative) 129 Jno Watson (Liberal) 118 Mr J Johnson (Liberal) 93
I think all four were elected here as in March 1896, Mr Higgins was noted as not standing again for election and Mr Watson was re-elected for Cheadle Hulme.

Looking up one of those names I have found this, which appears to have some spelling errors: The Urmston District Council was formed in December, 1894. The first election of Councillors was held on December 17th of that year, when no less than 25 candidates came forward for the 12 seats. The following were successful, with the result of the polling : Dr. J. Clegg, 515 ; Hy. Galloway, 498 ; W. Howatt, 370 ; E. Farrand, 346 ; G. P. Tate,329 ; John Walton, 328 ; John Soddy, 289 ; W. Seddon, 288 ; John Robinson, 273 ; J. Pearce, 273 ; itev. E. H. Cooke, 263; G. Houghton, 256. Dr. Clegg was elected as chairman. The cost of the election was £25. 16s.Henry Galloway is listed elsewhere as the builder and owner of Manor Croft, which was a rather posh house next to (and in the style of) Urmston Hall, the manor house for the area. Both were sadly knocked down after the War. But here is a picture (I have some elsewhere in an old book): www.flickr.com/photos/traffordcouncil/8677128193There is also a reference to Galloway's daughter contributing to the building of the parish church opposite. A plaque in memory of Dr. Clegg is still in place on the old Cottage Hospital (where my mother was born). Another book I have found refers to Clegg trying to keep the peace during a debate about extending the tramway in 1905, in which an argument occurs between Cllrs. Schofield and Johnson, with the former shouting "don't you make your dirty remarks to me", at which point "a scene ensued".
