Yes, very different accents despite being only a few miles away. South Manchester accents don't roll their r's at all. Get someone from Bury to say "four care-bears". Mirth ensues. Get someone from Burnley to say "did you park your car in the car park?" Even funnier. I think you might mean Blackburn or Bacup, rather than Burnley, young Drew ?

I wonder why Manchester is taking longer than the others? Large ward - nearly 13,000 electors and seven polling stations. Probably about the same number of ballot papers as Duxford but unlike Duxford, there are five candidates. Result widely expected to be close hence taking some pains to get it right.

As an aside, huge fan of your new way of mapping the results where you include a background map. The only change I might make is to have the shading slightly transparent, perhaps only on the inset (if possible). Then you could see the boundaries of the ward in relation to the street layout. I don't know how you make the maps but if you do it in QGIS it's just one setting you'd need to change.

I will give Gareth Snell credit where it’s due, he was always quicker with both Newcastle and Stoke council results on Twitter than either the council’s official Twitter or The Sentinel newspaper’s live blog.

Just noticed the UKIP result in Hillingdon - it must really be time to wrap it up now. That's the same number of votes we got in Clarence in a 2016 by-election but this is a larger ward and an area of considerable 'natural' UKIP strength. It's a fantastic result for the Tories in what is hardly a salubrious area and has never been close to being a stronghold

I entirely accept that point, especially as that must have been a pretty galling moment for her, but I think it illustrates the way in which some politicians, and I think it's usually Labour ones, are able to focus entirely on the battle between their party and "the enemy ". So for Labour that's usually the Tories, but sometimes the Lib Dems and in this rare case the Indy. It may be a useful attribute sometimes, but can lead to quite a narrow-minded understanding of what is going on, you might think justified in this case where it clearly it was very much a 2-way battle and the other 3 parties were almost completely wiped out. Nevertheless it is worth remarking that the three "minor parties"in this case, Conservative, Lib Dem and Green, between them still polled about twice the size of the eventual majority, so in a sense the result was still in their hands

That’s a very good achievement for Ken Dobson. To get 1100 votes. Not many Independents win in very big city wards. Particularly as Manchester Labour have an excellent electoral record.
