Happy with that, given the less than ideal circumstances of the vacancy Indeed, and it seems that a 2% increase in council tax has not led to revolt.

so in that one the Tory vote held up and no noticable impact of UKIP on their vote. Note a low score for the LD's in a labour seat.

Surprisingly good result for UKIP actually given the demographics

For a London seat that's not a terrible result for UKIP - they seem to struggle to make the same progress there as they have in other areas. The conservatives had a former councillor for the ward, which might partly explain (along with the circumstances of the by-election) why their vote held up better here than elsewhere. I think I made the same mistake Herbert Crossman made and overestimated his popularity - I thought he might split the UKIP vote a bit, but he didn't.

Jeremy Zeid will be recalled by some as a near-permanent fixture on the Ceefax/Teletext letters pages (of blessed memory) in the early years of the Blair regime. No real surprise that he has now thrown in his lot with UKIP

BTw, I think I saw somewhere that there was also an issue with unpopular parking charges in Cromer which may also have counted against the Conservatives there.

Sadly he passed away a few years ago. www.petersfieldpost.co.uk/news/leading-light-is-lost-1-703684

Lol @ that LD result. They used to win this ward when it was called Ridgeway It was in fact Herbert Crossman who was the LD councillor for this ward when it was Ridgeway. Since then he has stood as Referendum Party, Conservative, Peoples Independent Party (which he founded himself), Independent and UKIP

West Harrow update: I have uploaded some election leaflets from all candidates (except the Green) on my web site. Links can be found towards the bottom of the following page: www.harrow-elections.co.uk/7.html I hope they are of interest. Since the above post, I have added a significant number of other scans of literature delivered in West Harrow. Enjoy!

I spent the evening getting the vote out in Coatbridge West. Last I heard, we're looking at a turnout of around 20% there. Massive Labour lead expected.
