I find it difficult to have genuinely emotional feelings for things like disasters - I don't know whether its just because I see them as all one-step-removed, but their nationality doesn't come into it.

Yes, me too. I got quite cross about recent school shootings in America and other such events due to political failings (imo) but that is rather different.. People are dying in car crashes every day without anyone except family and friends noticing. How exactly is a plane crash any different? I found it impossible to join in the mass hysteria over Lady Diana as well.

I found it impossible to join in the mass hysteria over Lady Diana as well. Do you mean Diana, Princess of Wales? She stopped being "Lady Diana" 16 years before her death.

In the full council elections, Virginia Rounding was five votes ahead of John Edwards (148 to 143).

For God's sake don't reopen the swing thing. Poor Emma Palmer I feel sorry for - only 3 votes gained , and she's also lost an "n" in her description. Really humiliating.

Was there a recount?

Given it took two hours to get a result I guess there was.

Was the Rounding up or down?

Given it took two hours to get a result I guess there was. Unless they outsourced the count to the neighbouring local authority. Though 300-odd ballot papers in two hours might be a tad optimistic there.

Turns out the Farringdon Within byelection was even more dramatic than previously indicated. The final result was actually a tie with both Edwards and Rounding on 84 votes.
Alderman Vincent Keaveny of Farringdon Within ward drew lots to determine the winner of his casting vote, which Edwards won giving him victory by one vote.
