Having in the past lived in the B16 postcode area, I can confirm that the postal address is "Edgbaston",so on that basis North Edgbaston would be perfectly reasonable. However, there was up to the early 80's a Rotton Park ward covering a lot of the same area, and it seems a shame not to revive it. Some of the ward is not in Edgbaston. The ward should be called Rotton Park - it’s very close to matching the historic ward of that name. Seems a lot like people wanted to try and boost house prices - an issue that comes up a lot in boundary reviews.

Clifford, in Trafford. Not necessarily bad, but very obscure. I've yet to find out where the name comes from. Most people would say they live in Old Trafford, but both of the stadiums are outside of the ward, which perhaps rules it out. Cornbrook would make a lot of sense. The culverted river flows through the ward (under Cornbrook Street, surprise surprise), and the tram stop of that name is just on the boundary. Wherever the name comes from it's a very old name: the Victoria County History for Manchester suggests that the Clifford ward goes back to when Stretford UDC was set up. (The other five original Stretford wards were Stretford, Longford, Trafford, Talbot and Cornbrook). Interesting....sounds like somebody maybe made it their personal mission to have a full house of '-ford' wards, and nearly succeeded! Any idea how the original Clifford and Cornbrook wards related to each other geographically? (Sounds like the modern Clifford could well include most or all of the original Cornbrook?!)

Thank you! That backs up my argument that Cornbrook is no less historically connected to the present-day ward.
Still no joy figuring out the origin of the name Clifford, though. A hunt through old maps of that original ward does turn up a Clifford Street, but a nondescript one among back-to-backs, so hardly a likely contender.

Walsall has 'Willenhall North' and 'Willenhall South'. Obviously the ward in the middle which contains central Willenhall will obviously be called 'Willenhall Central'? Nope, its called 'Short Heath'. Because of course.

Nope, its called 'Short Heath'. Because of course. But the centre of Willenhall (ie the town centre) is in Willenhall South. Short Heath is a fairly distinctive community. The issue I suppose, in as much as there is one, is with the naming of Willenhall North, which isn't really Willenhall proper, but then it was part of the old Willenhall UD. It could be called New Invention, which would probably make the shortlists on here for the best ward name

Reading has quite a few bad ward names: Minster - Doesn’t include Reading Minster. Should be Coley Thames - Only has a tiny boundary with the River Thames. Should be Caversham Heights Park - Does contain a park but there is more than one in Reading. Should be Newtown or Palmer Park Church - Doesn’t contain any churches. Suggest Whiteknights as includes part of Reading university campus On Minster-I agree, a friend of mine is a councillor for the ward and she chose to represent the ward because she grew up in Coley Park. However, I don't think all the people who live on/near Tilehurst Road would be happy about told they live in Coley ward . It's part of a whole expansion of boundaries that needs to happen in Reading Borough so it covers Purley and Calcot Sainsburys' to Woodley Airfield/the A4 in Sonning and the Showcase Cinema, then wards can be redrawn sensibly. On Church-it might be better being called East Whitley, but the silly boundaries with Woky mess this ward up as well.If RBC was expanded, the ward could be reshaped and be called University. On Park, it should be Palmer Park or maybe Cemetery Junction as that is how a lot of us Caversham residents identify the area.Boundary changes are happening anyway,so a new name may be appropriate after the changes as I think Abbey is going to get smaller and shift westwards. Park could pick up the actual Abbey Ruins part of Abbey ward and become the new Abbey, given that the canal is a major part of the ward all the way through Newtown and the rest of it be renamed Central. Thames should and cannot be named Caversham Heights because it takes in a large swathe of the Henley Road area as well. If you were to rename Thames as Caversham Heights ,you would have to merge Mapledurham with Thames and remove everything east of Hemdean Road/south of Rotherfield Way to Peppard(east of Peppard Road) and put the rest into Caversham.

As it's just come up in another discussion: Neath East Rename it, maybe: Neath West? Would make more sense to rename all three of North, South, and East to Central, South East, and South West respectively. And to annex Blaenhonddan and Dyffryn communities to Neath town. But it must be a West Glamorgan thing. The old pre-1974 Port Talbot Urban District had a couple of brilliant ones: Aberavon East was located immediately south-west of Aberavon South; and Margam North included all of the rural parts of Margam parish, including a large chunk at its southern extremity. Has anyone got a map of these brilliant boundaries, by any chance?

Thanks to David Ashforth for pointing out that the National Library of Scotland have old maps with ward boundaries on them. The sheet boundaries fall very awkwardly, but I give you Margam North – first wrapping around Margam West and Central: *TWO* main grid lines run through Whitby, so local maps have always been messy.

I wish that NLS would stitch these maps together.

Spotted a few in Cleveland:
Guisborough area - Currently named ’Guisborough’, ‘Belmont’ and ‘Hutton’. All 3 wards cover Guisborough itself and should be renamed ‘Guisborough North’, ’Guisborough South East’ and ‘Guisborough South West’. Marske area - Currently named ‘Longbeck’ and ‘St Germain’s’. Rename ‘Marske West’ and ‘Marske East’. West Dyke - Named after a road that trails an uninhabited part of the ward. Rename ‘Ings’. Ladgate - Named after a road that travels through 3 other wards. Rename ’Easterside and Marton Manor’. Park - The usual generic name which gives you no idea where it is. Rename ‘Linthorpe East’ and consequently rename ‘Linthorpe’ as ‘Linthorpe West’. Ayresome - Doesn’t include Ayresome. Rename as ‘Whinney Bank’. Acklam - Acklam covers at least 4 different wards. ‘Acklam Hall’ would probably do.

Belmont and Hutton have local resonance and should stay. Guisborough ward could perhaps add Westgate to the name, that refers to the main street where the market is held. Or Guisborough St Nicholas after the parish church.

I know they refer to areas within the wards so perhaps aren’t terrible but the compass points would be clear to people outside the area as well. Agree that they should add something to Guisborough ward name if the other names stay, as it sounds like the whole of Guisborough is in the ward when in fact most of it is not.

If the boundary kept to the river for its whole length the Belmont/Guisborough naming split would look more logical.
If you browse around the ward map in Cleveland you find loads of odd wiggles where the ward boundary is contrained by an unreformed parish boundary, such as Woodcock Wood and Fancy Bank.

I have to say, I feel sorry since your neck of the woods contains possibly the strangest ward name (though maybe not the worst) - I don't even know how to pronounce Streonshalh, let alone what it means. Yet the name survived the review, so it must have some local resonance. Could the ward not be called Whitby East (or if a poetic name is desired, Abbey)?

It's perfectly easy to pronounce Streonshalh and it's clear it means Priests' Settlement. 'Abbey' is the name of the parish ward that you would expect to be called "East Whitby", and is the combination of the former East and Helredale wards. The current Streonshalh can't be called East Whitby as it includes half of the town on the west side as well. The ward boundary runs just behind my flat.
