If the pattern of BJP leads in West Bengal looks a bit... er... familiar, that's because the West Bengal BJP is indeed comprised mostly of former Communists.

Hey, look, a Labour MP happy about an election! Barry is extremely attentive to the politics of his voters in Brent as they are reflected in their country of origin.

Hey, look, a Labour MP happy about an election! Yuck. Why on earth would he do this? Who does it help or please?

Hey, look, a Labour MP happy about an election! Yuck. Why on earth would he do this? Who does it help or please? Himself and your party (leadership and his local party in Brent). They're pretty much his only values...

Barry is extremely attentive to the politics of his voters in Brent as they are reflected in their country of origin. It must have started that way (note that it isn't just that many are Indian and many are Hindu, but that many are Gujarati and forward caste at that soooo...), but his enthusiasm these days seems quite genuine.

Rahul Gandhi defeated at Amethi; the big symbolic blow that confirms the scale of the second Modi landslide. But he's not gone; the parachute at Wayanad in Kerala worked very well.

Another upset: Jyotiraditya Scindia trailing badly at Guna and presumably defeated. Elsewhere in the state, Chhindwara continues its unique record of unbroken Congress victories at General Elections,* though with a new candidate (Kamal Nath's son rather than the man himself this time) it was close.
*It was once lost at a by-election so not quite unbroken representation.

I noticed that the BBC referred to "the Hindu Nationalist BJP Party". A bit like when there was an episode of The Simpsons which referred to "The TTP Project".

Militant Hindus deal a blow to the endless political reincarnation of the Nehru-Gandhi family.

I'm trying desperately to work out in what way you think this is a great result but I give up. Modi's up there with Orban, Netanyahu, Duterte & Bolsonaro etc. as being the most nasty, divisive, self-serving shits to be elected in democracies at the current time. Modi's even worse than most because he effectively has a paramilitary wing as an integral part of his political organisation. Thousands more deaths in communal violence egged on by Modi in the next five years, joy of joys...

BJP has strenghtened its grip on the "Aryans" by conquering parts of the E&NE. As a result a Dravidian reaction in the S&SE - coalescing around INC or a coalition of local parties - could emerge.

BJP translates as Indian People's Party, there's no tautology here. Of course 'Hindu Nationalist' isn't exactly a great translation of Hindutva, but it seems to be the only one with a wide currency.
