Nothing on the biggest election on the planet ever?
A work colleague wants to put a bet on the BJP losing its overall majority but forming a coalition.

Results last time... Orange is, of course, BJP and light blue is Congress. Orange brown is Shiv Sena. Light green is Trinamool Congress; the various other shades of blue represent other Congress splinters. The various greens represent different splinters of the Janata Dal, except in Punjab (AAP), plus three seats in Assam, two seats in Kerala and also Hyderabad City (Muslim parties). Yellow in Punjab is SAD. Dull pink is SP (another Janata Dal splinter). Reds are the Commies; what's left of them. Other colours represent an assortment of regional forces etc.

Tamil Nadu's politics don't seem to follow the national trend. Not knowing much about Indian politics, is language and identity politics really that strong there?

The Tamils feel very strongly about their identity to the extent that Tamil Nadu is the only state in which Hindi is not part of the state curriculum. This is why English is still the lingua franca.

Which says something.

The Tamils claim its older than Sanskrit and the oldest language in the world. Everything there is incredibly old, huge aso. Most scientists still believe, afaik, that the Dravidian languages were brought by neolithic settlers from SW-Persia to the IndusValley. And - like Gaelic - it survived in the remotest areas. This theory is unproved. If not, than Dravidian would quite inevitably be the language of the first settlers of 60.000 B.C. (who were moving along the coasts from Yemen to Australia, Japan [Ainu] and Patagonia).

Yes. Oops! I’ll correct it. Thanks for pointing it out.

Exit polls predicting a majority for Modi's coalition, with the predictions ranging from 287 to 306 seats for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, and 88 to 132 seats for the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance. 272 seats are required for an overall majority. timesofindia.indiatimes.com/elections/exit-polls

Modi-wave!
With few votes counted NDA has lost summa summarum only ~30 seats (basically, what falls from ADMK to DMK in TamilNadu).

BSP&SP did really poorly in UttarPradesh (~15/80). Punjab and MarunchalPradesh weren't too gracious to Modi, contrary to the NE (as was expected).
Generally the provinces will have more mixed representation than last time.
