Or long-term incumbents that are hard, if not impossible, to dislodge? I recall having a disagreement with a now deceased Labour councillor on Stoke City Council who thought it was wonderful that just shy of 60% of the members had received their 20 year long service awards. Meanwhile resentment was growing and the City Independents (and to a lesser extent the BNP) were gradually gaining strength.

Some of the deceased are challengers rather than incumbents, but yeah.

Elections to Wareham Town Council have been countermanded due to the sad death of sitting Lib Dem Councillor Eric Llewellyn Osmond, a member of the town council since 1991 and former Purbeck District Councillor 2003-2015.

Just seen this; we had a Conservative candidate in Stoke roughly a decade ago who went out delivering his morning of poll leaflets, felt unwell, rang his wife to say he was coming home, and was found dead behind the wheel of his car later that morning.
