Pretty much! I will give Jack this he is actually a very nice guy, got a lot of time for him and the Lib Dems seem to have done a power of work in this by-election.

He also stood as an independent candidate for the Scottish Parliament in Northern & Leith seat and got a respectable vote.

A couple of years on any council will age him considerably. I speak from personal experience.

You move very quickly from "Should you be in this part of the building sonny?" to "Come on Grandad, have a seat and tell us about filling in allowances forms in the 1990s".

Somebody called the byelection at a time which made it impossible to have the poll combined with the election on 2 May.

But the by-election does not use STV. It uses AV.

That was a decision taken. They could use alternative arrangements such as co-option to fill casual vacancies (as happens in Northern Ireland?)

Same problem. The original election took place under different conditions to the by election.
Co-option would be better but then I'd never vote for STV in the first place

The irony is that the by-elections your using to launch this complaint is caused by the resignation of a councillor who was first elected in an STV by-election and wouldn't have won a seat then or in 2017 under FPTP.

Which is not the issue. It's the by election process I have issues with. I support electoral reform but not STV or other preference systems

Actually it uses STV for the number of vacancies. Usually one but there has been at least one two-member STV by-election.
