This is incredibly sad news; his speeches were some of the first I listened to when getting into politics and he always came across as a thoroughly decent sensible chap with an impeccable sense of humour to boot. Also worthy of respect for learning fluent Welsh as an adult. True credit to Labour, Newport, Wales and Britain. RIP.

This is incredibly sad news; his speeches were some of the first I listened to when getting into politics and he always came across as a thoroughly decent sensible chap with an impeccable sense of humour to boot. Also worthy of respect for learning fluent Welsh as an adult. True credit to Labour, Newport, Wales and Britain. RIP. He was a delightful old crank and an entertaining fixture of public life in South Wales. Will be missed even by those with massive political differences. |

Very sad. Not so long ago he seemed to be doing so well for a man of his age. An energetic and lively Commons performer.

One of the good guys. His bravery on drugs policy in the early 90s, back when saying drug decriminalisation was enough to get you sacked from anything, should be a lesson to all MPs.

He was a leftie, but voted for Blair in the 1994 Labour leadership election and Liz Kendall (!) in 2015. And then became a strong Corbyn supporter.
As I have already said, totally his own man and certainly not in the "tedious self important blowhard" manner that phrase can sometimes cover.

Read his autobiography. Very amusing particularly the tales of being paired with the permanently drunk and eventually out to lunch Dr Alan Glyn who was Theresa Mays predecessor in the then Windsor and Maidenhead seat

Amelia Womack was preselected for this seat in case of an early general election, so I'm pretty certain she will be the Green candidate when the by election is called.

" A POLITICAL party dedicated to scrapping to Welsh Assembly has announced it will run a candidate in the forthcoming Newport West by-election. The Abolish the Welsh Assembly Party has announced Richard Suchorzewski will stand for the seat, which has been vacant since the death of Paul Flynn on Sunday - the first time the party has run in a General Election. The announcement follows a poll of supporters on the party's Facebook page on whether they should stand a candidate in the by-election - in which 87 per cent backed the idea. Mr Suchorzewski, 55, who is also the party's chairman, is originally from Ystrad Mynach and has a background in banking and wealth management and today works as a business consultant in Barry." This is where living in Wales has a distinct advantage. They stood in the Assembly elections in 2016 in all five regions and came within a whisker of qualifying for the allocation of AM's in the Mid and West Wales region. Across the whole of Wales they polled 44,286 votes and in the Newport West regional list vote polled 1,123 votes (4.1%) of the total therefore I think they could easily poll between 2% and 3% of the vote in this by-election and would take the majority of their support from UKIP then Con. |

By coincidence I have just received Paul Flinn's book Dragons Lead By Poodles, his account of the fixed election that propelled Alun Michael into the leadership of the National Assembly for Wales. He will be sorely missed, an honest politician and a hard worker. And certainly a Welsh patriot and a socialist.
