The Cambridge concerned is a village in Gloucestershire near Slimbridge, I presume. Yes; it's one of those villages that runs along a single street like a ribbon, in this case the A38.

And, for the record, you are dead wrong about Slimbridge. It's a wonderful place. School trips have a way of sucking the joy out of anything, despite the joy of not being in lessons. Maybe Pete Whitehead doesn't share my fascination with ducks - few do in my experience. I wouldn't describe Cam as grimly industrial, in fact there isn't anywhere much I'd describe as such in the area, not even Stonehouse. The obvious place to go would be WSP's mill on the Cainscross Road in Stroud itself but I wouldn't call that grim either.

True, but 1) I'm not sure how many other working textile mills there are in the district and 2) at the time, Lister's factory in Dursley was still open which I imagine could make the area appear "grimly industrial".

Went canvassing in Cambridge earlier. The gang of 7 seem to have made an already difficult task just about impossible. Thank goodness the all-out elections aren't until next year. Tell us more. We spoke too loads of people who either a) were Tories (or LibDems) nationally but would vote for us in a local election (and we had the canvassing data to confirm this) telling us that they wouldn't this time because we were a shambles nationally or b) were wavering between us and LibDems/Tories but had clearly made up their minds overnight.

It is an interesting feature of current politics that a person who refuses to vote for one nationally shambolic party then votes for another one instead. Even one running the most shambolic government in the last 75 years!

Or Fieldview (Labour/UKIP). I don't think we'll hurt you much in Cambridge and Slimbridge, although it has to be said I was pleasantly surprised when I ran the clipboard for our canvass there yesterday. Hopefully having Emily Thornberry come down to canvass with us will help. Emily (and 6 other Shadow Cabinet members, plus the Police Commissioner and floods of activists) came to campaign in Almondbury, Kirklees, last May. I leave you to look up what happened!

Maybe Pete Whitehead doesn't share my fascination with ducks - few do in my experience. I'm very partial to Mandarins. And always a joy to see Goosander with young - usually lots of them! And I do miss Ruddy Duck now they're no longer to be found.

Just received a letter telling me I've been nominated as a counting agent by one of the candidates (presumably Liz).

I leave you to look up what happened! we gained the council? You did yes, but not the most targeted seat. Perhaps Emily and all the others had a negative effect? In reality the Lib Dems did the work over two years in Almondbury but not in Golcar or Colne Valley...

[b She didn't knock on any doors. But every time a Shadow Cabinet member visited there was a 1 or 2 page spread in the Examiner. I think many Tories noted the attention Labour were paying to the seat and voted Lib Dem accordingly

It's not a natural Labour ward by any means. Has been LibDem most of the time for years. They used to have a very combative left wing LibDem councillor - John Smithson

He took the seat from Labour originally of course, although the boundaries have changed quite a bit since then. Labour are said to have won the ward in the last GE. I would say it is trending Labour demographically, with buy to lets replacing long term residents in several places. Over 1000 not so affordable houses in the Local Plan may reverse that trend. Almondbury had one of the most remarkable results in the country in 2016, with the top three candidates within 80 votes of each other, and the Greens and Kippers both above 10%

Id be surprised if they knew or cared

I think you are over estimating how many people pay attention to visits by shadow ministers. Id be surprised if they knew or cared What's the point of them then? To encourage local activists to take part. There's an anecdote about David Penhaligon helping to stuff envelopes at a by-election. Someone asked if him that was really the most productive use of an MP's time. He replied "As long as I stay, you're not going to leave, are you?"

Doesn't seem to work in my experience. Especially if you're dealing with Diane Abbott who doesn't turn up anyway.
Dearly as I love Catherine it would take more than her presence in a committee room to keep me there.
