I doubt if arranging for a lack of quorum would be thought necessary. In many rock-solid Labour wards, here and elsewhere, quorums are rare. Sometimes branches based upon such wards have effectively ceased to exist, or have been merged with other wards.
Generally, I think it is very unwise, and unprecendented in my experience, for the MP & candidate to be party to a press release which says "it's time for a change". And whoever was responsible, deselecting Sheelagh Clarke is especially crazy.

The three Stoke-on-Trent Councillors (Janine Bridges/Neil Day/Duncan Walker) who recently left the Labour group , have all joined (and in Janine Bridge's case-rejoined) The City Independents, making 28 Lab, 13 City Independents , 2 Conservatives, 1 non-aligned ex-Labour

He was the sole GF councillor elected in 2012 IIRC?

Considering the North Lanarkshire candidates have just been selected, one can surmise that their preferred candidates weren't selected (maybe they even tried to get selected themselves, I don't know, North Lanarkshire hasn't been my focus of attention for some time now).

Cllr Lindsay Burr defects from Lib Dem to Ind. She states “I feel the party has somewhat lost its true direction and my values are no longer aligned to the party. I am particularly against fracking and in the light that Nick Clegg, the deputy prime minister, is supporting fracking, my position has become untenable". She represents the Malton division, North Yorks CC and Malton ward, Ryedale DC. Also reported is Cllr Shane Collinson, Ryedale South West ward, Ryedale DC having left the Conservative group. www.gazetteherald.co.uk/news/11785790.Councillor_Lindsay_Burr_leaves_Lib_Dems/

Another councillor leaving UKIP in Hampshire over the county organiser Paul Lovegrove, his criminal past (recent convictions for ABH and wounding) and the response to any criticism against him.

No comment from Casual Observer... or even fellow Islander Swampie... What a prize UKIP has gained with Mr Crowther! I'm only reluctant to make more political capital out of this because it would be cruel to the poor old guy. You won't get any useful work out of him if our many years of experience is anything to go by. Now, had it been Trevor Fentiman who had, as a Councillor, defected to UKIP in Minster then UKIP would have gained a real asset. As it is, the competent and plausible individual who has joined UKIP is no longer a Councillor and is in the wrong part of the Borough for UKIP, whilst the Councillor who has defected in the "right" part of the Borough for UKIP has no credibility. He'll prove, at best, useless to UKIP but may be, at worst, the same unreliable idiot that we've had to carry for years. Why do you imagine we deselected him for May's election this year? btw "fellow Islander" is incorrect, Pimp, as I'm sure you know! Just priming this one

Losing a technical majority is not the same as losing control.

We'll see if your petty point is true tonight at the Full Council budget setting.

You'll have to find an issue on which Labour (29 councillors) are on one side, and the other side unites the Conservatives (15), Liberal Democrats (6), UK Independence Party (5), ex-Labour Independents (3) and Green Party (1).
