Also his Frances McGlinchey (wife of Wilson) a Cllr in North Lanarkshire since 2007. Neither would likely have much of a chance standing for the Greens in 2016/7.

The only time I've ever stood for election was as a Green candidate in the by-election caused by John Wilson's resignation from North Lanarkshire Council in 2009. Despite my extreme personal popularity and political skill, I only managed 2.8% of the vote as a Green candidate...

Electing a Green MSP in Central would be a pretty tall order at the moment, though a surprisingly high number of new members have been from that area, so there might be a bit more of a campaign there in 2016 than there has been in the past (which isn't exactly saying much).

Yeah. Starting from fifth place doesn't sound so bad.. until you realise you're behind the last vestiges of the All Scotland Pensioner Party

Indeed does that still exist? Ah, all those small parties who briefly graced Holyrood or failed miserably, hoping that the voting system would let them in. The SSCUP, SSP, and best of all, Scottish Voice.

The SSCUP, SSP, and best of all, Scottish Voice. I'm still not sure what's worse; that Archie Stirling spent £184,920 on a campaign that got his party 8,782 votes, or that 8,782 people voted for a party that had no policies in its manifesto. And yes, the SSCUP and the All Scotland Pensioners Party were effectively the same thing, at least by 2011 (I believe that they were originally two separate parties founded on the same day that immediately entered an electoral pact with each other). Their website no longer exists, so I'm assuming that they've wrapped up.

They stood in 2012 locals (mainly in Fife, but also Highlands, South Lanarkshire, North Ayrshire and MOray, but I don't think they've made any of the by-elections since.

As Italy, the United States and several Brazilian pentacostal churches have shown us- never underestimate people's willingness to back a rich man who promises they will become rich too if only he can have their vote or money.

Don't forget the Scottish People's Alliance who contested the 2003 Holyrood elections, but as of 2014 still somehow have a lamppost poster up at the east end of Rose Street in Edinburgh's city centre. EDIT Actually, it sadly seems to be gone now. Looking at StreetView, it's still present in November 2012, but by the next update in May 2014 it's gone. Another victim of the tramworks perhaps? goo.gl/maps/aUZO8

I was trying to remember what they were called. And of course, they'd actually had two Conservative MSPs defect to them ahead of the election (co-incidentally after being effectively de-selected by their party, I believe).

Kath Murphy, Conservative candidate for Cheshire East in 2008 & 2011 (and previously a Lib Dem Focus deliverer), has joined the Labour Party. Notable only as she only needs UKIP and Green to complete a set.
