I wonder if the Berkshire Gauleiter himself is down there today. When I dipped into the site a couple of months ago the Party Leader, Mr Stott, was Chair of a branch in West Berkshire, it seems to have folded. He's still all over the website. I note he hasn't chosen to stand in any by-election, but has sent two proxies to cover three.

But seriously - I know some local parties find it hard to get candidates but for a winnable seat someone wHo later says he wasn't even a member and never really thought of himself as Labour should not be selected. And on top of that he holds the fringe nutter fundie views of the CPA!!! I don't disagree- but I have much more dislike for the type of people who want to be councillors because it fits their social ambitions, and don't really have anything in the way of political ideology. They tend to bob up in safe areas joining the dominant party.

Colin Haddington, Filey Ward, Scarborough Borough Council, Con to "no political affiliation" according to the following story: www.fileymercury.co.uk/news/local/colin-packs-his-bags-for-ukip-but-not-this-year-1-6926716But the Council's website is already showing him as UKIP. On the assumption that the Council's got it right, the new political make-up in Scarborough's 50 member Council is: Conservative. 25 Labour. 9 Independent Group 6 UKIP 4 No Political Affiliation 3 LibDem 1 Green 1 Independent Independent 1

Are you including the Lib Dem as a ragtag?

Are you including the Lib Dem as a ragtag? As their numbers haven't changed (from one!, at least since Brian Simpson went NPA about two years ago, and I'd have to include the Green as well), I listed the various versions of independent-ish that members seem to randomly bounce around between, and which are the numbers my list differs from.

Given the rest of the content of that website,I'll be surprised if it's true. Not heard any rumours or seen any other stories yet in the local press.

What a complete and utter twat !.How did he get selected in the first place, surely there must be a few Labour members better capable of standing than this political illiterate.

It does beggar belief. Mind you, being the lone Labour councillor can be a lonely task. I used to know a couple of people who had been in that position or in a tiny Labour group and being effective was very difficult.

I used to know a couple of people who had been in that position or in a tiny Labour group and being effective was very difficult. On the former Cheadle and Gatley UDC, Labour for some years had a single councillor: Norman Stoddart. Despite that he was chairman of Transport and Highways at one stage

He had previously announced that he was standing down at the 2015 election. Not clear if he's now standing as an Independent.

Not sure which was the more incoherent there - his explanation of his defection or the local paper's account of it.
