Wasn't he deselected in Hillingdon last year?

Think this is the first case of the UKIP defections hitting the "top Tory defects" barrier and stopping rather than breaking right through.

So he joined in order to become a parliamentary candidate. Sounds like both parties are well rid of him.

Another one from the Tories in Great Yarmouth, Jim Shrimplin (83), to independent. The "yes we weigh the votes here" 'safe seat' councillor for Ormesby, Jim was deselected by the youth wing candidate (60-something),and former group leader Barry Stone. Jim's deselection was part of the reason another Tory apparently jumped to UKIP ( www.greatyarmouthmercury.co.uk/news/great_yarmouth_tory_councillor_defects_to_ukip_1_3780519 ) although poor Jim did not warrant an on-line story in the local rag. He is by all accounts a good egg, non-ideological, judge a case on its merits individual who was looking to be the chair of NCC until 'dem kippers turned up last year and upset the apple cart. Jim has declared he will sit as an independent for the remainder of his term and so far will not confirm his plans for the future (well at 83 would you). Events prompted a couple of reprobate lefty former Labour councillors (and former party members) to take to the public gallery with 'justice for Jim' placards, which unfortunately Jim was unable to see as he "hadn't brought those glasses out with him", which was a bit worrying as Jim had drove to the council meeting...

Labour councillor Colin Fox to independent, Great Yarmouth Borough Council.
This is from personal knowledge, so no link until it makes the local paper.

Cllr Sue Nelmes, Lib Dem to independent (but remaining a party member): www.hampshirechronicle.co.uk/news/11525774.UPDATED__Former_mayor_blames_Silver_Hill_for_quitting_Lib_Dems/Something doesn't smell right here. She was heavily involved in the development she's moaning about, and whilst the social housing element has been cut, it's been increased elsewhere in response (dumping people down that part of town would be a bad idea anyway). She says she intends to retire, but note that someone had already been selected to fight her ward- I suspect it's a defection of the usual type. It remains a Tory minority administration, although it must be noted that two of the Lib Dems were elected as Tories.

So that's three residents groups/parties. How long until there is a re-rat?

Hartlepool Councillor Jonathan Brash, Labour to Independent Labour. Something about treatment by the Mayor, Stephen Akers-Belcher, who has been sacked by Newcastle City Council for gross misconduct, but refuses to resign as mayor. Jonathan was on the Regional Labour Party Board with me until a couple of years ago and was a good member. He was shortlisted for Police Commissioner, but not supported by Hartlepool CLP.
