no actual defections (yet) but one has to wonder on the effect of This on Bradford, especially given the various independent groups currently available Drink driving has not been considered grounds for deselection in the past. My late former MP John McWilliam was done for it and not a thing was said or done. I am pretty sure the same has gone for quite a few MPs and councillors in the past.

especially as he was selected, and re-elected after said conviction. One is tempted to conclude that it was the excuse rather than the reason for the decision

Vaughn Jones, Labour to Independent in Inverclyde. Labour have now lost overall control of the council as a result. Apparently, it's connected to her intention to vote Yes next week. Unless I've missed another change, Labour only had 50% of the seat(10 out of 20) before this defection, so never had overall control, strictly speaking. The Labour administration is supported by an Independent and a Conservative, so they retain control. (9 Lab 1 Ind 1 Con v 6 SNP 2 LD 1 Ind)

Good to know she has the support of her "continuants". Some might suggest that the main reason for her defection is her "continuants" as a councillor.

The Labour leader of the council is on twitter and really does himself no favours.

How about we set up a thread for 'principled' defections. I know it won't get used much, but it won't take up much space .....

& a strop for not getting a cabinet post ..... Possibly, but there is currently a lot of discontent in the Tory group over the de-selection of a long standing councillor, add to that there is rumoured to be a simmering discontent from a significant minority who supported a Tory-UKIP arrangement (rather than Lab-Tory) after this years elections.
Would be surprised if she left over the SRA (about £3K), her prime motivation always seemed to be Great Yarmouth in bloom,

Moved out to the sticks a more rural setting & have heard more about In Bloom from more people than I ever wanted or needed to know. Never ever underestimate the importance of In Bloom .........

I don't know anything specific about his defection but he's in on of the safest Lib Dem seats in Hampshire, including being re-elected this year and was a Tory member until shortly before he won a by-election in Portchester East in 2012. Very disappointed obviously but there's a bit of a history in Fareham of former Tories doing the dirty on us.
