Did he campaign in favour of his wife? I don't know any more than is in the article, but the article clearly implies that he didn't.

I couldn't begin to count the number of people I've persuaded to sign nomination papers on the basis that 'it doesn't imply any support for the candidate, it's just supporting democracy'. It's his wife, for heaven's sake.

He should have told her to sod off and get ten nominations from elsewhere (I think you can tell I'm single from that reply).

His first duty is always to support his wife and to provide encouragement. Signing the papers is just a show of familial solidarity and in no way implies actual political support. I have signed papers for a number of people i liked and knew but had no intention of voting for.

West End Socialist Independent. Did he go about it all very theatrically? I'll get my coat. Crewe's West End is very different (very, very, very different) from most West Ends!

This sort of idiocy keeps happening. How on earth is it too hard to pop into the job centre to sign off on the way into the Town Hall the first day after you get elected?

It is possible to be a councillor and unemployed, seeking a job. If I was to be dismissed from my job on Monday, I would consider myself unemployed and actively seeking work. I might not, though, bother signing on as unemployed because the councillors' allowance is much higher than the threshold for other earnings in JSA so I wouldn't get any actual money for the hassle of signing on; but it would mean that my NI contributions would be unbroken - which might otherwise have pension implications. For some people being a councillor is a full-time job; for most it isn't. Our esteemed and much-loved Minister without Portfolio has likened councillors to volunteer scout leaders.

Shapps: "councillors are brilliant volunteers" Well, of course they are volunteers, they aren't conscripts or convicts, and I wouldn't want them to be. Yet another person who uses "voluntary" when he can't actually force himself to use the phrase that he really wants to use: "(should be) unpaid". "We need volunteers to run libraries!" (We need unpaid people to run libraries) "We need volunteer nurses!" (We need unpaid nurses) "We need volunteer teaching assistants!" (We need unpaid teaching assistants) etc etc etc etc It should be beaten into these people with a large lump of concrete. "voluntary" is not the opposite of "paid". " unpaid" is the opposite of paid, "voluntary" is the opposite of "compulsary".

Is it termed as 'defecting' if you are a member of a party without holding elected or any other office?
As he is quoted in another paper's report as the obligatory "Senior Member of UKIP" I suppose that it's worth pointing out that he's another 'senior member' that I suspect virtually nobody in the party has ever heard of as he's not senior nor obviously a member anymore.
It's probably also worth pointing out that there is no block, attempted or otherwise on UKIP members talking as much as they like about Hamas and Palestine so that's a load of old boll**ks for a start anyway.
