Sandwell Councillor Defects to the Green Party
17 March 2014
Tividale Councillor Jayne Wilkinson, who was elected a Labour Councillor in 2010, has joined the Green Party, becoming the first Green Party Councillor on Sandwell Council and the second Green Councillor in the Black Country. Councillor Wilkinson gained her seat from the BNP on the same day as the last General Election.
Councillor Jayne Wilkinson said "I have been extremely disappointed with the Labour Party in Sandwell. They are seriously out of touch with the ordinary working man and woman."
"Sandwell Council is famous for its lack of democracy. Full Council meetings are known to last just an average of just 40 minutes."
"Their Councillor allowances (£1.2million in 2012-2013) regime is used to milk the taxpayer for personal gain, while ordinary residents suffer from Labour's terrible management of Sandwell Council." (1)
"As a Councillor for Tividale, what matters to me most, before any party politics, is working for and on behalf of residents."
"The Green Party is a party of principle, not tainted by the greasy pole of the traditional political elite or the desire to milk the system for personal gain. I am impressed by their decent policies for ordinary working class people."
Councillor Wilkinson, a shop steward for the USDAW trade union, hit the headlines over the Langley fire at the end of 2012 at Alcohols LTD, Oldbury [2].
She also championed for Sandwell libraries during a difficult time when public service cuts threatened the service. Jayne supported and became a leading member of the Friends of Rowley Libraries Group.
Councillor Wilkinson left the Labour Party in February 2013 after alleged bullying by Sandwell Labour Party who she felt at the time did not like her speaking out on so many issues as a new Councillor.
Green Party national deputy leader, Cllr Will Duckworth, said: "It is no surprise to me that Jayne has chosen the Green Party as her new home."
"Tividale voters expect someone to stand up for ordinary working people and Jayne is that voice, a voice she is allowed to express with her Green Party label but was suppressed in doing so while a Labour member."
