Apparently I was supposed to guess that you have to contact Kris in order to colour up a non de plume. Since being informed of this I have to say that I haven't bothered. I can add you to the UKIP group right now if you want, takes about ten seconds. Yes please feel free to do so Thank you

There's a Paramjit Bahia who frequently appears in the comments of articles of the Daily Echo down here- given the location and the hard-left guff the commenter puts out, I suspect it's the same person. Note- I've just realised that that Southend link is in fact to a Daily Echo article.

Gethin has apparently said he'll be leaving the Independent Group formally in the morning. BUT. I know Ray Quant (leader of the Indies) is quite pissed by Ellen's behavior (she's been true to form, I have to say) - she's effectively dictated what he do with his own group and I can't imagine there won't be repercussions for that. I'm not sure this story is quite done yet......

Ceredigion and Powys both have 'groups' of 'independents' I can recall an independent group wide leaflet in Ceredigion in 2004. I don't know about 2008 and 2012 but in 2004 the indi group in Ceredigion had a common set of aims published, not quiet a manifesto in the traditional way but at least an idea of what they wanted to achieve (even if they had no idea on how to get there)

I remember reading of a Councillor who was the Independent Group WHIP on one Local Authority! A bit of irony there?

We have 2 formal groups of Indies - one of which ran as a group at the last election on a common manifesto. There's the Independents, which are the larger group, there's also Independent Voice, which is 2 Independents and 1 Labour Councillor. Both of those groups are currently in Coalition with Plaid (the 2nd group of indies exist mostly to guarantee Hag, the Labour Councillor a Cabinet seat). There's also a single non-aligned Independent, who sometimes styles himself as a Nationalist Independent who was a member of Plaid in the last term. I know. It's totally bonkers. The Indies and a Political Party for all intents & purposes, they just don't formally constitute themselves as one so as to captialise on the Independent tradition.

Presumably the Labour councillor is himself a de facto Independent, in that there's very little organisation so he must win largely due to his personal vote?

Was he deselected by any chance? No , he is not due up for re election until next year . Simply a case of someone who should never have been selected in the first case ,

This is most definitely NOT meant as a Racist remark of course but merely as an observation. Is it pure coincidence or do Councillors of Indian and Pakistani Ethnicities change Party Allegiance more often then those from other groups? If so is this owing to a difference in culture?

It may be worth reading paragraph 107 of the judgment in the Woking election petition:
"In this (as in some other communities), family ties are very strong. At the same time the community may well be divided into factions which do not reflect social or political conditions in England but do reflect disputes and loyalties in the country of origin. Thus, while, politically, the politicians divide into the national political parties, their allegiances may have little to do with the ideas and policies of the national parties but are merely externalisations of intra-community divisions for which the labels 'Conservative', 'Labour' and 'Liberal Democrat' will serve as well as any other."
