Yes, he didn't defect as such, but was chucked out because he was nominated as Mayor in opposition to the official Conservative candidate for Mayor. He used to have a bright blue fence round his garden. It amused me that sometime around the time of his original defection, this was replaced by a new plain wood fence. Maybe it will get painted blue now . . . I understand the Tories have selected in his ward, but I wouldn't have been surprised if he stood down in 2014 anyway.

Councillors Ken and Hazel Turner in Dudley have defected to UKIP Given the collapse of the Dudley Tories and their previous resignation that is no surprise. Remember they were independent after leaving the Tories a while back.

It's like a game of Happy Families, isn't it: Mr Turner the defector Mrs Turner the defector's wife, etc...

Seemingly tangentially related to the recent furore with the council leader resigning, Tendring Conservatives have expelled one of their number from their ranks, namely Cllr Delyth Miles of Walton: www.gazette-news.co.uk/news/10875615.Top_Tory_expelled_by_council_group/Somewhat confusingly, a month later they still haven't got round to informing the district council of this. But then they do seem to be waging a losing battle on about six different fronts right now.

That could well mean a change of council control - Conservatives used to have a majority. Depends on the Labour group of two and the sole Independent, but both look more likely to support the Liberal Democrats.

They won't have lost control until a full council meeting formally removes them. Next one is not due until 20 February, although an emergency meeting could possibly be summoned sooner if the Lord Mayor decides so.

She has very little chance of winning as a Tory in that ward. I guess she could win in a good year if she was prepared to stand again in the future. You would have thought that after 15 years as a councillor you would have enough loyalty to not defect to an ideological opponent.

To me there remains an absolutely fundamental difference between Labour and Tory. I could imagine leaving the Labour party. But I couldn't even conceive voting for the Tories let alone joining them.

The prospect of gaining/losing Special Responsibility Allowances can do strange things to the political compass.

Has anyone ever done the stats on whether there are more defections from opposition groups to administration groups, or vice versa?
