I think in the states it may less of an issue because the full term is Jewish American - Princess, rather than Jewish - American Princess. More seasoned travellers than I will correct me if I am wrong but I believe terms like African American, Italian American and (presumably) Jewish American are commonly used as fairly neutral descriptors. Also the insult is to Jewish Americans, not Jews as a whole.

I often visit New York and was stranded there after 11th September, 2001. A Jewish family put us up and I heard the phrase "Jewish princess" for the first time. It was used by an 84 year old Yiddish speaking woman and referred to her slightly younger 'uptown' friends who had married well. Ms Berger doesn't fulfil the criteria and us goyim should avoid using it.

Perhaps 'us goyim' should also avoid using terms that are disparaging or insulting of 'us', like 'goyim'. Interesting that you seem to assume that all of us are non-Jewish anyway. I've no idea whether or not there are Jewish people posting here (most don't where their religions on their sleeve), though it is statistically likely that some are

I studied Hebrew for 3 years and still think of Goyim as referring to the nation of Gentiles ( as it came to mean by the later Greek Empire times). I make no assumptions as to people's religious beliefs or otherwise, I was simply trying to lighten the tone. That went well!

I'm not jewish. However, I look so jewish that my wife's (jewish) best friend assumed, without thinking to ask that I was jewish and asked my wife if she was going to convert! My friends at school made lots of jewish jokes on my behalf, and as a result im sort of used to these sort of terms when I shouldn't be!
I plead jewish by proxy.

I know at least one Jewish person with no connectio with the faith. I think he won't be seen dead in a synagogue. But would definitely describe himself as Jewish.

I was reponding to Pete Whitehead's comment at this point. I am well aware that Judaism is an ethnic as well as religious description.

I have been evangelised by Jews for Jesus in America. Twice. I have had people coming up to me on railway stations (Leeds actually) and asking me if I am Jewish. Twice I have been talked to in Jewish museums with a clear assumption that I am Jewish. Of course I may have some Jewish blood as I am adopted and unsure of my precise ethnic inheritance

There are places where the Labour Party is very good at being very nice and helpful to opponents they are trying to seduce. Post-coital is sometimes rther differemt!

He does have a point, though. Sometimes you can get more done if you are part of a party - I note that his Independent colleague was actually elected first as Labour, and at the last elections neither the LD's or the Conservatives fought the seat

Does everyone remember Carl Clark, the councillor on Breckland district council elected in Thetford Abbey for Labour? Last June he resigned from the Labour Party and said he would seek re-election as an Independent, only to have second thoughts almost immediately and decide that he wouldn't force a byelection after all. After some time as an Independent, he is now listed as a member of the Christian People's Alliance: democracy.breckland.gov.uk/mgUserInfo.aspx?UID=975

Do they have councillors anywhere else, or is that their first?

They were the official opposition on Newham in 2006-2010 with three councillors, and Alan Craig had been elected as the sole opposition councillor in 2002.
