I think there is a good case for anyone defecting to have a period of solitary reflection before joining a new party. Not for the sake of the new party but to help them think it through. Applies in all directions. not just ones that benefit my lot.

George Kemp Allerdale,Netherhall Maryport. Independent to UKIP
He's still listed as no party on the council website- I've taken the story from Paul Nuttall's website. In 2011 police said he wasn't fit to supervise his pub, but I can't find what happened after that.
According to the Reading Chronicle dated 26 April , Lesley Hayward, Lib Dem cllr for Bulmershe and Whitegates on Wokingham BC has become an independent. The article is, however focused on her role as town councillor, so I don't know if she has completely left the party. The council website doesn't appear to mention political parties.

One of them (a woman) was interviewed on PM on Radio 4 on Friday evening. She was extremely patronising when referring to David Cameron! That's just how she always is. They are saying a sixth Tory is going to go indy. And a number of them have confirmed they're going UKIP.

Thanet District Council, Ian Driver, councillor for Northwood ward in Broadstairs, from Independent to Green.
Following gaining our first councillor in Kent County Council two weeks ago, the Green Party now has its first district councillor in the county.
Ian Driver was first elected to Thanet district council in 2011 as a Labour councillor, coming third in this 3 member ward. I don't know when he left the Labour Party to become an Independent.
He appears to have recently stepped down from Ramsgate parish council, thus causing the recent by-election on May 9th in Northwood ward, which UKIP gained by 7 votes from Labour. There was no Green candidate in the by-election, which also saw the Lib Dems recording what must be one of their lowest ever votes, 3.

One wonders why the other four have not yet joined UKIP on Merton. Two of them, Rod and Linda Scott have been very quiet since last Wednesday. One wonders whether the other four are having second thoughts about joining up with Hilton and Evans.

Paul Waugh is reporting that the Liberal Democrat whip is likely to be withdrawn from Mike Hancock. Alistair Carmichael has "categorically denied" this almost immediately, so it's probably true.

I think the question is as to what one does when someone is prosecuted for a criminal act by public authorities. I understand it is normal for most parties to suspend the whip. As I understand it this is a civil action suing for damages by the lady concerned (I wonder who is paying for the action). Different standards apply to those. My gut feeling considering the accusations is that he should 'voluntarily' withdraw from the whip for a while.

What I noted with interest from the article was that Welsh Councils still have the right to overrule the electorate and suspend someone from office. Thank goodness that is back as a matter for the courts in England. Not to say that they wouldn't have suspended him just that I don't like kangaroo courts.

www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/news/apparently will not be resigning from the conservatives and will stand down at the next election, seems like a personal issue.
