Hillside and Raynes Park would not immediately strike me as being UKIP-friendly wards. Don't know about Lower Morden. Lower Morden would be relatively good

I wouldn't have thought Morden was the best place for UKIP- aren't their best parts of London in Havering, and probably Bexley and Bromley, which are very different from Morden.

I didn't say it would be the best place in London. I said 'relatively good' as in relative to the other two wards mentioned and to the borough of Merton as a whole.

Lower Morden would be relatively good I think certain parts of Lower Morden ward would be very good - UKIP did pretty well in the 2004 by-election there and there were almost 500 BNP votes there in 2010 (no UKIP candidate; I'm not saying that UKIP voters are racist, merely that many of the anti-establishment/plague on all their houses reasons that 'otherwise sane' people vote BNP apply to UKIP too). Numerically the most UKIP votes for the London Assembly in 2012 were in this ward (they were a very distant 3rd behind Tories/Labour). Interestingly we did quite well in Lower Morden in 2010. Similarly, parts of Cannon Hill demographically I think will be good for UKIP (and also their 2nd best numerical result in 2012). Food for thought for Cllr Miles Windsor, who I'm surprised hasn't gone with them . . . Actually, if I was UKIP I'd be looking at challenging some of the Labour hegemony in places like Ravensbury and St Helier.

It's good to see that it's nowadays mainly the Tories suffering from this kind of thing!

Apparently, his colleagues in the Labour group failed to elect him to the (one) Chair of Scrutiny, preferring another asian Labour councillor instead. Oh, and the majority Tory group may have offered him something too.
Also, the timing may be related to the fact that he had failed to be elected to the County Council a couple of weeks back, so not a happy bunny.

She had previously left the Labour Party over Iraq in 2003, but came back. Her departure in 2012 looks a classic case of being unable to cope with the local consequences of the cut in central government grants, although she had voted for the budget earlier in the year. Which makes joining the Lib Dems look decidedly odd.
