This doesn't surprise me. He has done a number of stupid things over the years, and assault is very serious. He has been a liability for the conservative group in Barnet for a long time so I can't say I'll miss him being a conservative really.....

And not just Barnet.
Still I do feel sympathetic for all those taxi drivers who have lost large sources of income over the last year or so.

Pretty bad idea in London (outside the NE/SE fringe)

After Hilton's comments, Kipper bound? Quite possibly. Although the dispute is over Council tax cuts. For the six weeks whilst Hilton was in charge, Tories had a "petition" for a 10% council tax cut on their leaflets . . .

Not so sure, think they may be UKIP bound as it very much fits in with Richard Hilton's style of politics, no future as Independent Conservatives. That question has been asked and no answer has been received yet.
Really need to have some vote 2014 London Borough forum given the elections are now only a year away.
Webcast going live of the meeting soon.

Guess it might partially depend on whether anyone else goes with them, and whether they want to carry on as councillors? Given the line that's being spun is that this is all about fighting over who got to be Mayor, it's difficult to see how they could credibly turn that into going UKIP. Actually it's a bit of a gift, because by Suzanne Evans saying it's about who gets to be the Mayor (rather than principle) we can now all point out that they're far more interested in the trappings of office than anything else . . .

Credibility has never been a precondition for defection. You're right. But there's a reason that all those deselected councillors who suddenly find out they're in the 'wrong' party want to talk about how they don't support what the national party is doing in/out of government. Merton's Conservatives are effectively saying: "It's a fair cop, this is all about back-room deals, personalities and jobs".

In Greenwich Conservative Cllr Eileen Glover has appealed to Central Office alleging that age discrimination played a part in the decision not to reselect her for Eltham South ward next year. At the Council's Annual Meeting last night she complained about being listed as unaligned in documents and demanded to be described as Independent Conservative. The Mayor politely declined to give a ruling and referred her to the "usual channels".
I think she is within her rights to demand this, as far as I can see the Registration of Political Parties Act 1998 applies only to elections and not within the Council Chamber

Musical chairs on Pembrokeshire. Sue Perkins from Labour to Independent Group (although she was already sitting in the cabinet in a slightly odd arrangement) David Bryan from Independent to Conservative

Hillside and Raynes Park would not immediately strike me as being UKIP-friendly wards. Don't know about Lower Morden.

The Merton story is additionally amusing for those of us involved in Conservative Future a decade ago. Back then Hilton and Miller (& her now-husband) were pretty strong allies amidst some deep splits and factionalisation and very much on the left of the party and CF. Hilton was absolutely DESPISED by the right second only to David Pugh, then the National Organiser and later leader of the Isle of Wight until this month.
