and would expect more to 'come back' ? I could imagine that a couple of the others might feel they have been 'bounced' into the Independent group and may reconsider. Minds will be concentrated when it becomes clear that suspension from the Labour Party and almost certain expulsion will follow if they persist with this course. Latest from Harrow is that the Labour group has written to the leader of the Independent Labour group to urge him to change his mind. However the tone of the letter tends to suggest that they don't expect a change of mind to be likely: "Until the point that you announce your new Cabinet, and we see you shoulder to shoulder with Harrow Tories, we will not believe that your head and heart are still not firmly with us – and with Labour."

Interesting list in Scotland and how are the Lab/Con coalitions going then ? Well they cut council tax in Stirling.. I'm not sure how Labour can sanction that alongside cuts to their budget.

no nor can I as it goes against all our policies I imagine it was a Conservative demand to enter into coalition, but it perfectly displays how petty SNP-Labour tribalism can be damaging.

Thaya Idaikkadar of Harrow now tweets:
"New cabinet announced. 5 labour I councillors and two conservative councillors as non executive observers."

The nine Labour rebels in Harrow are: Cllr Thayapara Idaikkadar (Roxeth ward, currently Council Leader) Cllr Krishna James (Marlborough ward) Cllr Husain Akhtar (Canons ward, elected as a Conservative) Cllr Asad Omar (Headstone South ward) Cllr Nana Asante (Edgware ward, currently Deputy Mayor) Cllr Zarina Khalid (Queensbury ward) Cllr Raj Ray (Roxeth ward) Cllr Nizam Ismail (Queensbury ward, currently Mayor) Cllr Mano Dharmarajah (Roxbourne ward) They are shown as such on the Harrow Council web site. Apparently Cllr Omar is the group's deputy leader. Breaking news. Cllr Raj Ray back in the Labour Group. The rebels now number eight. On Friday the BBC web site quoted an Independent Labour Group source that Cllr. Will Stoodley (West Harrow ward) had joined them. This has now been confirmed by other sources, so the rebel group is now back to 9 members. Cllr. Idaikkadar has announced a Cabinet of 5 rebel members, several doubling-up and tripling-up on portfolios, and there will be 2 non-voting Conservative executive members! Looking at the personnel in the Cabinet, as described by the Harrow Observer, one is led to the conclusion that this is a recipe for disaster; I really can't see this working at all, this cannot be in the interests of the residents in Harrow.

I will happily concur with the hon. member opposite on this one. Indeed, Susan Hall and Barry Macleod-Cullinane want shooting. Tories oughtn't to go to bed with the devil, particularly a nasty divisive little lot like this. And to do it the year before an election....

Why did Cllr Perry challenge Cllr Idaikkadar in the first place when the latter had only been elected as Leader six months previously?

Why did Cllr Perry challenge Cllr Idaikkadar in the first place when the latter had only been elected as Leader six months previously? The background to the change of leadership of the Labour Group in Harrow is as follows: In September 2012 the Leader of the Labour Group (and Leader of Harrow Council), Cllr. Bill Stephenson, announced that, due to health problems, he was stepping down from the role. The Labour Group met on 23 October 2012 to elect a new leader. Cllr. Thay Idaikkadar was chosen from a field of five candidates by a preferential ballot. He was subsequently confirmed as the new Leader of Harrow Council when it next met. The Labour Group held its 2013 Annual General Meeting on 15 April; as usual, elections were held for all positions in the group, including that of Group Leader. At the meeting both Cllr. Idaikkadar and Cllr. David Perry were proposed for the position, so a ballot was held to choose between them. Cllr. Perry won the ballot and became Leader of the Labour Group. It was anticipated that Cllr. Perry would be confirmed as the Leader of Harrow Council at the Council's Annual Meeting in May 2013, but this is now unlikely to happen unless the Conservatives have a change of heart in supporting the Independent Labour Group. One can speculate as to the precise reasons for Cllr. Idaikkadar's failure to be re-elected, but I think it is safe to say that a majority of the Group were either: (a) dissatisfied with his performance, or (b) felt he was not up to the job, or (c) believed that Cllr. Perry would do a better job in the run up to the 2014 Borough election

You scooped me! Numerically this changes little in Cornwall, but may make it more likely that the Independent Group will be less likely to act as one Group. Eathorne-Gibbs is not popular with quite a few of them.
