Philip Blond now saying the rumours concern a Lord. I'll admit Sugar wouldn't justify anything as he's already gone.

"Former Labour Cabinet Minister, Andrew Adonis resigns the Labour whip to head the Government's National Infrastructure Commission".
High Profile Labour Resignation? Hardly

The Great Days. I remember Silver City Airways with the rickety front loader ferry from of all places Lydd. A oddly named place with an army training centre for special forces and an explosive works (Lyddite...a poor man's Semtex) in remote marshland, pre nuclear power station. Isn't that the stuff that was used for trench foot? It would certainly have cured all known foot and indeed lower leg ailments.

The first defection was always going to be HIGH PROFILE LABOUR FIGURES JUMPS SHIP IN RESPONSE TO CORBYN NIGHTMARE, whether it was Lord Adonis or an obscure Baron so unknown they don't get a caption on BBC Parliament until the hundredth person asked goes "Ooh, HIM."
Adonis was, at a point, recognisible a figure amongst those who gave a hoot about railways and infrastructure. He clearly cares a lot about investing in rail and transport matters. Ex SDP, Ex LibDem, so not exactly a shock to see him move away from Labour for a new post, but as the media need to get in a POST CORBYN SCANDAL, this one seems the first hook to hang whatever thought pieces they can about CRUMBLING LABOUR PARTY LOSES MAJOR FIGURE.

I'm always reminded of the description a number of years ago in Liberator magazine as the "misnamed Lord Adonis"

"More Andrew than Adonis", it used to be said.
He made light of it when he was testing the water about being a Labour candidate for Mayor of London, saying that "affordable housing" was the biggest example of a misleading name since his own.

This sounds more like Cameron rehashing the equally misnamed "government of all the talents".

It's not really a defection, Chris Smith (and Janet Young) gave up affiliation at the EA and Chris Patten has since being at the BBC (although he isn't any more): surely this is just an expected result? Lord West would be much more newsworthy.

Lord Adonis also began his political career as an SDP councillor in Oxford. So, he only held elective office for SDP and LDs.

I can't link from my phone, but have we had the six months suspensions of two Labour councillors in Stoke up here?
(i.e suspended from Labour)

Adonis might not be a political giant but he is a former cabinet minister, he served in government for 5 years and his achievements as a Mister of State went far beyond most politicians who held that rank. He is hardly some anonymous former junior minister.

I never realised he was a member in the first place. I always assumed he was one of the non-political appointments that happened under Blair and Brown. Why the ANNOYING BLOCK CAPITALS In your text. Are you a COMPLETE LUNATIC or is your SHIFT LOCK MALFUCTIONING. You come across as a DEMENTED IDIOT,

Andrew Adonis's defection from Liberal Democrat to Labour occurred in late 1995, if I remember. He was already quite a significant figure as an academic, so it did get some attention.

He is hardly some anonymous former junior minister. And encompasses much of what is wrong with Blairism and Not Labour. Like the invention of academies. I won't miss him.

On a positive note, it is a good thing to have Andrew Adonis contributing to the Government's infrastructure process, in particular with the delivery of HS2.
