The man is a clown and the Conservatives are stupid to have him back. I recall disliking him even when he was a Tory MP as he was a militant anti-smoking Nanny-statist

He was a funny one. Pro death penalty but anti smoking. Was he married before the Hampstead Heath incident or did he come out after it?
A complete chancer whatever. I think everyone on this forum and it's predecessor who has commented has come to the same conclusion. The likes of Peter Temple-Morris and Alan Howarth one can believe but Amos was so right wing he was almost a parody. I met him when he was a LBTH councillor and didn't immediately realise who it was.

Don't think he was ever married.
He did have a "girlfriend" when campaigning to become Hexham's MP in 1987 but they "split up" the day after his election - strange, that.

What is the point of Llais Gwynedd? To make Plaid look moderate and reasonable?

This one will bring back a few memories ... not good ones. Worcester City Council: Alan Amos, elected for Labour in Warndon ward, left to sit as an Independent a year ago when the Labour group refused to make him Deputy Mayor - and then voted out a Labour administration and voted in a Conservative one, has now joined the Conservatives. Or should I say "rejoined". It does rather emphasise why sometimes it's a good idea to be suspicious of defectors

Well, yes, because he presented himself as a Bennite left winger. I used to know a girl who worked alongside him at Conservative central office (Tory family who got her the job and she has never voted for them since!) and she wasn't very complimentary

In those LBTH days he lost the Labour Group nomination for Chair of O&S in 2003 to a councillor who was, how can I put it kindly, neither very bright nor very articulate. Amos didn't see it coming but I did. He was a man who couldn't build empathy with colleagues and had a very high opinion of his abilities and status. I remarked to him at the time that he could always re-defect and become the first ever LBTH Tory councillor....and then 12 years later I wonder if he will pop down and campaign for Peter Golds? I somehow doubt he will be welcomed with open arms...

IT does mean that Bristol now has the joint largest Green group in the country, level with Norwich.

Fi is an ugly abbreviation and it does not fit with Hance. It could confuse with fiance or finance! Ming was another very silly abbreviation from a rather old school and sensible man. Over the years I got used to it up to a point but it had an air of comic baddie of minor part in an asian martial arts dreadful. What on earth possessed him? Menzies is a nice enough name and having been given it why not use it?

There is a men-ziss faction of whom the Australian PM was the most notable. It seems thuswise more as a surname rather than Christian name. It is the contraction to occasion a spelling not forming out of the original I dislike and the clunky sound. It just seems odd. I don't like contractions even though I put up with my own being shortened. In my case it is convenient to save a near inevitable misspelling and getting it wrong.

As mentioned in the Coventry thread, Mark Taylor - chairman of Coventry UKIP. He hasn't officially said which party he is moving to, but it's almost certainly the Conservatives.

I wonder if we have another from the classic taxonomy of defectors- the lesser-spotted Bandwagon Jumper.
