I am surprised that Huddersfield CLP have not selected a candidate for the General Election since Barry Shearman announced he was standing down ages ago. Are we to assume that those seeking nomination have done their sums and have a good idea how the vote will go? They have selected. Harpreet Uppal.

Are we to assume that those seeking nomination have done their sums and have a good idea how the vote will go? It was one of the earliest selections of the parliament and went to former Ashbrow Cllr Harpreet Uppal. The relatively young and Huddersfield native head of staff for Debbie Abrahams. I believe they are on the soft left, endorsed by Burnham Sobel Gwynn et al.

Reigate & Banstead, "Lower Kingswood, Tadworth & Walton" (2028). Zelanie Cooper, Independent to Residents Association. Nevermind, looks like this was a website error, now reverted.
North Yorkshire, Weaponness & Ramshill (2027). Rich Maw, Labour to Independent Unaffiliated.
Cambridgeshire, St Neots Priory Park & Little Paxton (2025). Keith Prentice, Conservative to Independent. And now listed as Labour.

Gives the Green Party representation at every council level in Painswick and Bisley.

All these defections and recent gains in the valleys mean the balance of the Labour group has tipped firmly towards south Kirklees. A complete turnaround from just a few years ago. Not sure what the implications of that will be. Also only a third of the Labour group are now from an Asian background (!).

Perhaps it didn't go ahead. Ms Khan had planned to stand for the deputy leadership before her suspension and subsequent departure.

In a town where I once lived, the local firm of solicitors were the highly inquisitorial Askew & Askew 😄 This is off-topic, but since you've raised it -
Years ago (true story), I arrived at my office desk one morning to find a scribbled note asking me urgently to ring a law firm I'd never heard of called Wright Hassall.
Given the cartoonish name, and the fact that the date so happened to be 1 Apr, I assumed that this was a practical pleasantry on the part of some colleague and that if I rang the number it would connect me to Battersea Dogs' Home or something equally ridiculous.
So I ignored it. Only to take a call a few hours later from Wright Hassall, asking why I hadn't responded.
It turns out to be an entirely legitimate firm, based in Warwick, with which I went on to have intermittent dealings in the following years.
Also on this theme, I am delighted to report that there is an estate agency in Worcestershire called Doolittle & Dally.
With apologies for digging up an off-topic post a few pages back, they had a hoarding at Kidderminster Harriers, and I managed to work their name into the match report I did for Exeter City's official site when we played them back in the late 2000s, in connection with a bit of statuesque defending by the home side.

I always smiled when I saw mention of the sadly fictional firm of solicitors, Sue Grabbit and Runne.

This is the point where someone (me this time round) reminds everyone that there is indeed a well-known firm of estate agents in the West Midlands called Doolittle & Dalley.

I think that may have been lost soon after it was gained - I don't think it's the first defection. Nevermind, you're right, puts them on 18/36. For some reason OpenCouncilData has 19/36 as LD minority. Okay, LD had 18 elected in May 2023, then had a defection from Ind to get the majority, and have now lost it again.
