The Local Government Act needs to be amended so that anyone who is currently a councillor and wins a council seat in a different area to the council they currently serve on has to either resign their prior position or forfeit the win in the different council, thus causing a by-election (i.e. meaning no person can serve as a councillor in more than one council area at a time with the exception of district councillors serving as county councillors in a county covering the district they are a councillor for). Why? I get it’s not necessarily particularly practical to serve on two different councils, but if the voters choose them to be their councillor and they are a fit and proper person to serve then what business has the Local Government Act to stop the democratic will of the people? Though the voters of Ordsall presumably had no reason to think that he was going to try to become a councillor in Tetbury?

The magnificently named Sinclair d'Albuquerque of Sefton council, elected for the Conservatives in 2021 but who left the party and had been leader of the Southport Councillors Group, has now joined the Liberal Democrats.

He represents Cambridge, which the Lib Dems held 43% - 34% over the Conservatives last week.

And like every voter who disagrees with a choice made by their elected representative, they’ll have the opportunity to pass their judgment on his actions at the appropriate democratic juncture.

Twells states that he will resign “as soon as possible” and then multiple times effectively says he will resign within 6 months of the 2024 local elections. I would not consider the latter “as soon as possible”. In The Grauniad he says the next local elections or a GE, whichever is sooner. If true that is plainly not satisfactory, and every effort should be made to ensure he departs his Salford seat sooner.

He must have heard the drums in the election he was standing there for you and me, and for liberty.

Cheshire West & Chester. Gill Watson, Labour to non-aligned Independent. Any word on why? The most recent political article on Cheshire Live is titled "how Labour tightened their grip on Cheshire West"!

your post reminds me that during a visit yesterday to the 1970s time-warp Edgar Wallace pub near the Law Courts in London I saw an advert for, amongst many other old products, Wincarnis. That possibly even predates the 1970s.
