What's more shocking, the thought that UKIP are still going, or the thought that they think this is a major catch? UKIP were crowing in the Western Telegraph claiming "First county councillor in Wales" when reporting that one of the councillors in Pembroke Dock was now a UKIP councillors. I am waiting for permission to deflate that little bubble by reminding them of Penydarren on Merthyr in 2012

The Greens, in my role as a regional list candidate in direct opposition to Neil Hamilton (the leader of UKIP in Wales)

I'd always assumed Katie Hopkins was a member of UKIP, anyway

I'd always assumed Katie Hopkins was a member of UKIP, anyway UKIP is rather left-wing for her.

Bolton council has had an eventful time since New Year: - Anna-Marie Watters, elected in 2016 as a Labour councillor for Westhoughton South ward, has joined the Conservatives - as reported on the relevant thread, Paul Wild, Conservative councillor for Astley Bridge ward, has sadly died - Beverley Fletcher, elected in 2019 as a Conservative councillor for Breightmet ward, has gone independent - Diane Parkinson, elected in 2014 as a UKIP councillor for Hulton ward, re-elected as a Conservative in 2018, has gone independent - the Lib Dem group has withdrawn support for the minority Conservative administration

On the whole people will be accepted at face value unless they have a substantial social media presence which can be interrogated. To some people’s surprise not everyone involved in politics has a social media presence. Also there isn’t a lot of competition to be a councillor these days. As you consistently post, local authorities have little power these days, and councillors mostly have to administer cuts for the Conservative government. This is not exactly attractive for Labour members. I commented before that in my safe Labour ward the councillor candidate was selected unopposed. This wasn’t the only ward where this happened. And it is a prominent and very political council which had been reduced in size, leaving existing councillors scrabbling for a seat.

Regional Yorkshire & Humber Labour has been very insistent that all of our wards need to have a contested ballot for selections.

Not always easy - the Labour to Tory defector on Stoke City Council last year proudly boasted of becoming politicised by standing with her dad, a striking miner, on the picket lines, and up to her defection was a member of “Stoke Says Jez We Can”, and an office holder in the still going North Staffs Miners’ Wives Group, which is mostly into community arts nowadays, and a singer in their choir. Her last Facebook post two days prior to defecting was comparing her family’s reliance on the charity of others to ensure she and her siblings ate during the strike to today’s reliance on food banks and comparing both to “evil” (her word) Tories. Not much there to suggest a likely defection.

In the early 2010s there were a number of people who defected to Ukip who first showed any sign of caring one way or the other about the EU when they wrote their resignation letters.

Why is Staffordshire live reporting on political manoeuvrings in South Derbyshire? Because it’s the website of The Burton Mail, and Burton-on-Trent is for all intents and purposes Derbyshire, including having a Derby postcode.

Why is Staffordshire live reporting on political manoeuvrings in South Derbyshire? Cut and paste websites as both are owned by the same firm.

Why is Staffordshire live reporting on political manoeuvrings in South Derbyshire? Because it’s the website of The Burton Mail, and Burton-on-Trent is for all intents and purposes Derbyshire, including having a Derby postcode. So why call it "Staffordshire live" rather than, say, "Burton live"? Not saying there's anything wrong with it, merely commenting on the seeming incongruity of the name.
