I think we should be able to distinguish between a County or District councillor and parish councillors . If UKIP ever get a significant number of elected councillors then you will see defections too and get a little upset if you had campaigned or voted for them . |

Defections are for a variety of reasons. From High principle to jumping before you are thrown out for kiddy porn on a laptop.
A good chunk are because parties and members have drifted in different directions. Clegg and lefty Lib Dems are an example as are those going UKIP because of Cameron and the coalition. They are probably IMPO less likely when a party is moving up which currently helps Lab have fewer.
Then there are those because someone has fallen out with the leadership, lost an SRA, been deselected etc.
It can be very difficult to distinguish the types even when you know an area. From our perspective we just excercise our prejudices on whether to believe them.
And finally as usual on this point I disagree with Mark re defectors being (morally) obliged to resign. I see that as giving far too much power to party managers/whips. I think Mark and I are quite consistent on this whether it advantages or disadvantages the Lib Dems!

He is a councillor/ not 'councillors' He is a Town & Parish Councillor, not principal area "Seen it all" - well if he only joined post-Iraq he's not been around for ever has he? And curious that only recently he was seeking election to a party office, long long after the coalition agreement, and the broken pledge on tuition fees. Nothing to see. Move along. |

LOL. My contacts with them (my wife's family are on the island) have left me feeling they're a deeply weird bunch; evil is perhaps a bit harsh! There seems to be something about islands (Wight, Anglesey, Man...) that foments odd politics
