Excuse my ignorance but how the hell was he still a member? He was suspended during disciplinary proceedings. Now he left, killing those proceedings.

Steve Baker MP (Con, Wycombe) has said that the Coronavirus Act is "extreme, unnecessary and disproportionate". Assuming that means he will vote against the extension today, does that mean he will have the whip suspended from him (or is that the modern day Conservative Party of mouthing off about something in a way to attract that kind of person even if it against party policy, but then signing them up as Conservatives, a la Trump)?

But he has done this on every occasion. Then he either votes with the Government or abstains. Handwringing is his trademark

Breaking the whip is rarely a reason to have it removed. If it were both parties would end up spending the entire time playing a never ending game of musical chairs.

Why on earth would he have the whip removed? Well given the precedence set during the EU Withdrawal Bill, and continued with Julian Lewis, this lot hardly have much of a track record for tolerating dissent. Given some Labour backbenchers, apparently being led by Dawn Butler, are also talking of rebelling a short suspension may secure some political gain by daring Starmer to follow suit and portraying him as weak and ineffectual if he doesn’t.

I suspect part of the Tories' enthusiasm for repealing the FTPA is that, in doing so, it allows the re-introduction of the ridiculous "confidence votes" to keep backbenchers in line.

Rumours on Twitter that Joanna Cherry MP has defected from the SNP to the Alba Party. I'm sure the SNP would be delighted by that move if it turns out to be true. There aren't all that many MP's who , irrespective of party affiliation, come over as thoroughly unpleasant people who you would want to avoid, but she is certainly one of them!

Even when I hear political gossip first hand someone else posts it first - this forum is faster than Twitter. And yeah, MacAskill's left the SNP, wont be the last big name defection then.

He is standing in the election. So we might see a fairly interesting by-election in East Lothian sometime in the next year then?
