So macaskill is standing in a region that doesn't include his current seat.

Rumours on Twitter that Joanna Cherry MP has defected from the SNP to the Alba Party. She is a genuine radical feminist, so I think would be uneasy about anything which might suggest she is tolerant of sexism.

Even when I hear political gossip first hand someone else posts it first - this forum is faster than Twitter. And yeah, MacAskill's left the SNP, wont be the last big name defection then. First rule of political journalism - all the defectors will be "senior politicians". Even if said journalists have been describing them as "pipsqueaks", "has-beens" or "non-entities" in the past.

Yes, although that term might struggle under its own suspension of disbelief if used for, say, Corri Wilson.

I guess she's not confident that Scotia Future will get in, so that their party leader can outsource some work to her.

So is MacAskill the Chuka of the SNP - overhyped early in their career, never done anything to justify the hype but still clearly believe it themselves, think their defection will completely change the political order and then... well we know what happens next?

He is standing in the election. So we might see a fairly interesting by-election in East Lothian sometime in the next year then? Possibly, although there will be no requirement for him to stand down as there is in the SNP (introduced recently, it is strongly suspected, to stop Joanne Cherry getting into Holyrood and challenging Ms Sturgeon).

He is one the SNP genuinely are well rid of.
If there is to be a third then MacNeil is surely the prime candidate.

This will be an interesting one. Only.an MP since 2019, he was suspended for 2 year old tweets which were anti-Semitic but still remained a candidate as his name was on the ballot-paper as the SNP candidate. To his great credit, he underwent courses to deal with his tweets and seems a fairly decent chap. A medical professional, he was sacked from his appropriate frontbench post on Covid-19 Vaccine Spokesman for supporting Joanna Cherry (by backing a fundraiser for a defamation case against several people who attacked Ms Cherry, including fellow SNP MP Kirsty Blackman). He is a victim of the Trans row, another gay MP attacked for being on the wrong side of the SNP culture police. How the boundaries shift.

He should remove the SNP noose/ribbon thing from his name.

No I don't think so, whilst she's sympathetic to Salmond's plan, think as a feminist she wouldn't want to be explicitly associated with him. I also think she genuinely enjoys being an MP and wouldn't want to throw that away lightly. I think her plan is to remain in the SNP, try and shape the debate, and try and replace Sturgeon if/when the opportunity arises.
