Just a fairly gruesome set of contests for us for this week!

If there is a by-election in a place where a party has no active members, there is a choice: ignore the by-election, put up a paper candidate, or put up someone and set up a team to go in and try to find new activists. The third is not always possible if a group has other priorities, and different people in parties have different views about he value of the second. So I do not criticise people in my party who sometimes, in appropriate circumstances, default to not putting up a candidate.

Well he had to do something to enliven a particularly boring set of actual elections, certainly as far as the three English ones. Maybe Scotland may yet do us proud though, and drive somebody to verse....

Maybe in the time of year sense? Campaign workers and voters will only just have finished the main holiday season so perhaps both have been thin on the ground (hence the low turnout).
