We have a date: 26 October.
At the moment looks like it will be Michael D. Higgins vs. a Sinn Féiner. Several other Independent candidates have expressed interest but whether they can get nominated is questionable.
Will be a referendum on removing blasphemy prohibition from the Constitution on the same day.

What's the punishment for blasphemy? The present law covering blasphemy is the Defamation Act 2009. Section 36 defines a new indictable offence of "Publication or utterance of blasphemous matter", which carries a maximum fine of €25,000. No prosecution has been brought under the Act to date. The Wikipedia article on the history of blasphemy law in Ireland is interesting. An amusing aside. In 1713, Dr. Browne, Anglican bishop of Cork and Ross, preached that the famous loyal toast - "To the glorious, pious and immortal memory of the great and good King William, not forgetting Oliver Cromwell, who assisted in redeeming us from popery, slavery, arbitrary power, brass money and wooden shoes."- was blasphemous in terms of the old Common Law offence of blasphemous libel. In response, the following elaboration was often added - "May we never want for a Williamite to kick the arse of a Jacobite! And a fart for the Bishop of Cork!" |

Sean Gallagher the runner up the last time will almost certainly get the nomination via the county councils,as should his dragons den colleague Gavin Duffy. Finally 20 independent members of the oireachtas should nominate someone,most likely Joan Freeman meaning there will be 5 on the ballot.

Seán Gallagher has his four county council nominations (from Roscommon, Mayo, Leitrim, and Wexford) so is an official candidate.
Joan Freeman currently has three (from Cork City, Galway County, and Fingal), and Gavin Duffy has two (Meath and Carlow). Two county councils are meeting later today to nominate.

How do you view the fight for 2nd place? Gallagher looked certain to get it with a solid lead in the polls, but the SF candidate has been gaining on him lately, and there has been some talk that Casey's anti-Traveller remarks could give him a boost and split the Dragons' Den vote even further.
I am betting on Gallagher to be the (distant) runner-up, so I have some interest in the matter.

I haven't really been following this, so I checked the Wikipedia page to check what parties they all are. Slightly not surprisingly, they are all independent candidates (except for the SF candidate), but - very surprisingly - three of them (Casey, Duffy and Gallagher) are or have been dragons on "Dragon's Den". Wtf is that about? A co-ordinated gimmick, or just a coincidence?

I presumed it was a sort of oneupmanship among Dragons. Gallagher ran in 2011 and was doing quite well, so the other Dragons feel they must have a go.
