We need to change the way we count votes, its too slow. If this was America we'd all be in bed by now. How hard can it be? #bored Some things never seem to change: Lewisham have always been slow at counting votes. I think at the 1983 election they were the last London seats to declare, (apart from the ones that weren't scheduled to start counting until the next morning).

If we counted our votes like America, then roughly 400-500 seats would be 'called' within about five minutes of the polls closing on general election nights. Much less fun.

A bit of a surprise — Sky News are live at the count.

John thingy just said result expected between 1 and 2 AM. A lot better than the 3 AM which was mentioned earlier.

"Soon" loses all meaning on by-election night.

FT chief political correspondent:
"Jim Pickard @pickardje
well-placed rumour is that Labour majority in Lewisham East has been slashed thanks to strong surge by the Liberal Democrats"

FT chief political correspondent: "Jim Pickard @pickardje well-placed rumour is that Labour majority in Lewisham East has been slashed thanks to strong surge by the Liberal Democrats" in what sense? If their majority is half of last time 12,000 would still by 36% over the lib dems on a 33% turnout

Press coverage of Parliamentary byelections in safe Labour seats has often been rendered poor by an obsession with the numerical majority, which invariably falls because the turnout is so much lower. I expect that to happen here as well.

I am going to go with my earlier prediction of figures similar in % terms to 2010. That would be a swing of about 25% Lab to Lib Dem

The LD canvassing prediction was almost spot on once again. It was forecasting Lab 49%, LD 25%, Con 16%, and the result was Lab 50%, LD 25%, Con 14%.
