I’m honestly more suspicious of pro-western parties in the former USSR (excluding ones that are in the eu) since Pashinyan and Sandu won. Both are pretty much using the state as a weapon against the opposition like the pro-Russian parties used to do. No dog in this fight... but what is the end game here? or in the Ukraine to be quite honest. The EU and US sponsor pro-western (sometimes separatist) groups with little regard for their wider ideology, popularity or competence with the aim of curtailing Russian revanchism and influence, end result? Ultimately - and it seems pretty clear from the rhetoric of some - your left with a reheated version of Piłsudski's Promethean plan from the 1920s. But I don't see how a poor and balkanised Russia helps anyone and this has been the apparent implication of the West's attitude to Russia since the 00s - perhaps accelerated by the accession of ex-Warsaw Pact nations into the EU and NATO. |

This might change but so far the protests have been relatively half hearted. The protests against the foreign agent law seemed much more significant.
