I think the Dutch have a bigger tradition of finding solutions than the Greeks.

They do (of course), but this kind of radicalisation is pretty much unprecedented. The VVD is way to the right of the CDA and the SP is way to the left of the PvdA.

I suppose the question is - would that change if they became permanently established as the "main" parties??

I'm not sure if 'permanence' is really a concept that has any relevance to Dutch politics these days.

With these polls, I wonder if the Dutch could be going to the polls again a couple of months after this election? SP+PvdA+GrLinks+D66 should do it.

Did anyone hear the report on PM today about how their is a growing Eurosceptic vote in Holland? That would have been unthinkable ten years ago Pim Fortuyn's List came second in the 2002 general election.

Well, the piece in last weekend's Observer bigging up the SP maybe looks a bit ill-timed now......

Pim Fortuyn's List came second in the 2002 general election. Yes but it isn't just Pim Fortuyn. The socialist parties are now questioning the validity of the EU according to the BBC piece. The European left has always been predominantly Euro-sceptic. It's just more noticeable in the Netherlands because their left is in a different party from their centre-left. It's worth recalling that Van Rompuy is a Christian Democrat, and that a super-majority of the European Commission are right of centre. Britain is unusual in that our mainstream right is Eurosceptic.

No, just secular Conservatives. No Liberals, just not my cup of tea (though better now that the likes of Verdonk left).

Yes but it isn't just Pim Fortuyn. The socialist parties are now questioning the validity of the EU according to the BBC piece. As EAL argued, Euroscepticism is not a new thing for left-wing parties (see UK Labour when it had a significant left-wing). Pim Fortuyn's List came second in the 2002 general election. Euro-scepticism was hardly the only reason for that. Well nor is Euroscepticism the only draw for the parties promoting it nowadays.
