Don’t know whether Wiveliscombe is counting tonight. It's a large and remote ward, and I would doubt it. Greens gain

Well it was a longstanding Indepdnent ward. Don't know anything about the candidate here, but usually these sort of results suggest they are a de facto 'local residents' candidate - I doubt it portends a Green surge nationally or even indicates much about underlying support for the party locally

The residents here don't like voting for Parties and hence the order of the candidates was the inverse of national effectiveness..

May 1999 was Labour’s last appearance according to Andrew’s Preview. Going from 2015 there’s only the Independent who resigned to trigger the by-election and his running mate (not sure which was the top vote getter of the two) to eliminate when calculating swing as Conservative, LD and Green were the opposition.

Where did that come from? I understand that the previous Independent councillor was supporting our candidate. I thought we had a chance here, but was by no means certain we would actually win.

So that's four Green gains in principal authority by-elections over the last year, that has to be a new record high for us.

So it makes sense for Green supporters to still be very pleased about this result.

I did notice that the other sitting Independent councillor for the ward was the Green candidates proposer and several of the town council nominated the Green candidate. Had he stood as an Independent rather than Green, I would have expected him to win. As has been said, Wiveliscombe is 8 miles down a rubbish road from Taunton, and has a bit of a ‘ignored by Taunton’ and politicians generally vibe.
